Edge of Nowhere Preps For Cthulhu Horrors On June 6th

Insomniac Games’ Edge of Nowhere is a cool looking game. It’s a shame it’s being designed for the ground up for virtual reality headsets, but the concept and the themes look fantastic. It’s a Lovecraftian, third-person survival horror game and it really aims to put the thrilling psychological elements back into the horror genre.

The launch trailer for the game gives gamers just enough to get them hooked, letting them know that they’re out search for the missing crew of an expedition into the mountains of Antarctica. As players venture deeper into the mountains and discover that some of the missing crew have been warped into disturbing abominations. Worse yet is that there are Cthulhu fiends lurking about, flying monsters with hideous features, and impossibly large creatures fit only for another world.

They don’t really show how players are going to deal with these horrors, but it sure looks like it could be a lot of fun. Check out the launch trailer below.

I’m liking that the game appears to have a focus on exploration. We don’t get many games these days where players have complete control over the character, but they’re compelled to just explore. A lot of titles are linear, string-along games so there’s a steep limitation on what you’re allowed to do and how you’re allowed to do it.

If Edge of Nowhere allows players to just kind of wander around at points and get killed out of nowhere, that would actually be pretty awesome.

We do see that the main character will have to do a lot of platform hopping at one point, so it looks like there’s going to be a mix of platforming, exploration and some third-person combat.

Insomniac Games have originally made this title for virtual reality headsets. The adoption rates are still rather low, but slowly and surely we’re beginning to see some content being made available in high frequency for the HMDs.

The Rift and Vive are still on back-order for a lot of people, but I’m assuming both companies are hoping that by the time the hardware becomes saturated there will be a killer app or two on the market. I have zero hope that there will be a killer app available for VR devices by this fall, but Edge of Nowhere definitely looks like it could be a fun game to play even without a headset.

You can look for the game to launch on June 6th, next week, for VR devices on PC. You can learn more by checking out the official website.
