Event[0], AI-Driven Sci-Fi Game Releases September 14th

Trapped out in space and desperately seeking a way to get back home, the game Event[0] sees players in the role of a straggling survivor who must befriend a lonely AI computer on a desolate spaceship in order to find a way to get back home.

The game is pretty cool in its design based on the information they’ve released so far. French developers Ocelot Society have players exploring the ship the Nautilus, which they describe as being the “body” of the AI, Kaizen. The ship will react based on Kaizen’s mood and players will have to interact with the AI in ways to get the ship to behave in a way that benefits the player’s survival.

The one line from the press release makes me think that the game could end up being similar to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, where it states…

“As in any relationship, there can be gratitude, disappointment or jealousy, and Kaizen reacts differently depending on its mood and the situation at hand. The ship, Nautilus, is essentially the AI computer’s body, and reacts to Kaizen’s mood by making different sounds, which can give the player subtle yet valuable clues”

That sounds… crazy.

Then again, we’ve had a lot of games with big, ambitious design mechanics that didn’t always quite pan out the way the designers wanted.

In this case, players will be able to freely explore the ship at their leisure, finding ways to interact with Kaizen and become friendly enough to get the AI to comply and get you back to Earth in one piece without any HAL incidents occurring. There will even be some moments where players must traverse outside the ship on a space walk.

Event[0] is built on the Unity 5 3D game engine, and originally started off a small student project but has evolved and grown into something much larger.

The independently designed game will be available for purchase through the Steam store and the Humble Store starting September 14th next month for PC. For more info on the game be sure to visit the official website.
