Valkyria: Azure Revolution Release Date Set For Jan 19th, 2017

Sega’s cel-shaded JRPG, Valkyria: Azure Revolution, has received its official release date. The game is set to go live over in Japan for both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation Vita starting January 19th, 2017.

The news about the game came in fast and sleek thanks to a new trailer that was released that spelled out the news in just under a minute. You can check out the trailer below via Anime News Network, which is very reserved in what it shows aiming not to give away too much or spoil anything.

We get a quick glimpse at one of the main villains, a busty vixen with some special powers. We also get to see a few quick glimpses of the characters plotting and planning, as well as a few special moves being rolled out by some of the characters.

Valkyria: Azure Revolution is somewhat of a risk for Sega because the previous games in the series haven’t been the most well received when it comes to commercial success. Nevertheless, Sega has stuck with the franchise, rolling out new games in the Valkyria series every once in a while. The game’s trademark cel-shaded design returns each time out, this time it’s been upgraded to a GOUACHE shader system to better resemble a painting, which is different from the more pencil-oriented design used in previous games. ,They also make tweaks and modifications to the battle system, with the newest game getting an almost major overhaul on the design.

In the earlier renditions it was turn-based, but they’re mixing things up with Azure Revolution by having the battles close to an active, semi-real time setup. They also wanted to give more space and scope for the large-scale army battles that players will encounter.

You can expect to see and hear more about the game at this year’s Tokyo Game Show in Tokyo, Japan, set to take place this September. The game was originally scheduled for a winter, 2016 launch but it looks like Sega has settled on a mid-January, 2017 release, which still fits within close proximity to the window that they had originally announced.
