BBFC Appointed Censorship Role Over Websites, Porn, Adult Content
(Last Updated On: October 15, 2016)

The British Board of Film Classification has been appointed arbiter over adult content viewed by U.K., citizens via the internet. This comes after the BBFC signed an agreement with the U.K., government for the 2016 Digital Economy Bill, where the appointment of arbitration was granted to the classification board.

The news was reported recently by Xbiz.com after the bill was weighed in on by the U.K., Parliament in a recent committee hearing that you can view over on the official Parliament website. The article explains that the BBFC will be monitoring local and foreign sites that may contain content for those 18 years of age and older, and will ensure that these sites have appropriate age gates for accessing said content.

BBFC director David Austin is excited about the organizations new role as an age-verification and content monitoring regulator, this role extends to websites containing adult content that may not be suitable for younger viewers, ranging from violence to sex to foul language. According to Xbiz…

“Austin said that the BBFC will methodically start focusing on the largest offending websites, including foreign ones, and notifying them for breaches in the U.K.’s mandatory age-verification laws.

“While it will be “extremely challenging to pursue foreign websites” not complying with U.K. law, Austin said that offending sites will face a notification process that may include the filing of sanctions against sites’ business partners, such as payment providers and others that supply ancillary services.”

This rule of regulation extends well beyond the U.K., and offending sites could be sanctioned by the BBFC that would result in them having their IP address blocked or being de-indexed from major search engines.

Jerry Barnett from the website Sex and Censorship explained that the bill is fairly wide-sweeping and could almost be used to censor whoever the BBFC doesn’t like, writing…

“In the current draft of the Bill, the definition of porn has been hugely extended from hardcore material to any sexual/nude/erotic material. The old regulations have been extended from covering just video to including still imagery and even audio.”

The first thing that comes to mind is what happens when websites host video of video or audio content for games like Criminal Girls or Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni? Will they be hit with sanctions?

According to an article on The Register from back onJuly 8th 2016, some U.K., politicians are interested in age-rating all websites, forcing them to adopt ratings just like films and TV. This would be extremely problematic given that content would determine a website’s rating, and as we all know some content can be very NSFW while other content is fairly harmless. It would be a real shame if certain websites reported on a controversial game, movie or event and went from being rated “PG” to “X” at the snap of the BBFC’s digital fingers.

i don’t know if your interested in continuing this topic but here’s another petition https://www.openrightsgroup.org/campaigns/digital-economy-bill-hub/stop-uk-censorship-of-legal-content and here’s a tweet by one of open right’s group’s member’s https://twitter.com/AlecMuffett/status/798265625466597377

What’s exceptionally stupid about things like this is that when you take the censors to task about rating discrepancies over the years, their response is always “it’s what the public will tolerate!” Which I respond with “then why all the ‘scientific’ studies to back up why a certain rating was given?”

Either this shit is scientific, or it isn’t; they cannot have it both ways.

The reason I doubt BBFC to police this is they basically censored films that will contain “sexual violence on women”, it took 20 years/over of straw dogs to be watch uncut version, they’re wavie the cuts.

There one & only one rape scene. Soldier blue was another film had its cut wavie. So did Emmanuel-1 even the infamous smoking scene was restored back.

The fact the BBFC took a strong stance against sexual violence was because a SJW male boss of BBFC, when he left the More daring films like 9 songs come out,

But that strong stance of sexual violence may linger & you get play acting of rape as Rape porn may get the stink eye by BBFC & blocked that site.

I said before BBFC was okay with video games, even depicted of women characters in those games & pass them uncut without order the Devs to make the cuts.

Because context is key as they fictional characters e.g. Drawings, computer generated graphics they not cover as films, so basically they views was relaxed.

  • Maybe it’s time we just cut the submarine cables that connect the UK to the rest of the world…

    • There are still satellites, though.

      • Won’t those be really slow, though?

        • They still give the Brits access to the rest of the world.

          • Better shoot them down, then.

But they’d probably overload with everybody trying to access them at the same time.

  • MusouTensei

    Fuck the UK.

  • Alistair

Oh yes billy what will happen to YouTube that has unsuitable content like criminal girls 1& 2 Japanese play though. Soft porn, sex comedy films. Etc etc.

& how will google respond of having a Age gateway on YouTube.

But the pitch forks will be out there if youporn, pornhub get IP blocked.

Because a saction is a death nil. Truly it’s the end of UK freedom of speech & expression but not all is lost because if a lot of porn sites are blocked the porn industry will have a fucking say.

Besides some pornsites like nutaku go hentai games got a Age gateway, I got multi devices & each time I put nutaku on them a Age gateway happens.

    • I’m also curious about sites linking to sites with material the BBFC considers to be 18+? The one thing that’s a bit worrying is how they have loose descriptions for adult content and how they can sanction a site that breaches that line.

    • “At least it’s not the sexiest label on games.”

You can absolutely bet that’s coming soon.

In today’s extreme PC, Social Justice and feminist climate in the UK, this will pass. And it’ll be pushed through as silently as they can to avoid as much dissent as possible.

I would love to be proved wrong on this of course.

      • chris

there already a lot of dissent over this law already, hopefully it wont pass as it is

    • chris

thing is they will ever be able to end of UK freedom of speech & expression no matter how much they try, if they block porn sites or YouTube or other social media there will be a huge outcry and like you said the pitch forks will be out

in the end I dont think they will put age rating on sites because it would be to hard to enforce

      • Alistair

Let’s hope it fails big time then, twitter is another site could possibly have 18 rated content.

I hate Boards trying to be police officers anyways moral police officers.

    • doctorwhocommentator .

i hate to break it to you but mindgeek (who own youporn and pornhub) have already agreed to age verification, it’s more profitable to cut of there competition

      • Alistair

Then that alright then, but having the BBFC age baage doesn’t mean they’ve safe from cuts.

As a brit i see films carry a 18 on a film but have cuts to them, the film industry did nothing to protest them. BBFC will allow certain content that pleases them, Not us and certainly not the film industry.

Besides it going though Parliament and not decided just yet.

        • doctorwhocommentator .

it will pass, mark my word’s with Britain’s history of censorship we are returning to the 80’s and it terrifies me, but if you want to help fight it you can spread and sign the petition https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/ensuring-personal-privacy-and-sexual-freedom and you can watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4Z7kSXiunE&feature=youtu.be I would really appreciate it if oneangrygamer could help spread these.

          • I’ll take a look into it and see if something can get tossed up to inform concerned internet goers about their privacy and internet freedoms.

          • doctorwhocommentator .

better do it fast some possible amendment’s were just released, if put in then it would force ISP’s to block all porn by default as well, and force age verification on social media http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/bills/cbill/2016-2017/0045/amend/digital_rm_pbc_1018.pdf

          • chris

the amendment’s have been withdrawn for now but may come back at a later stage

          • Alistair

Wow i hope that good news, it easy to poilce films In uk.

But to mange to monitor the whole web is impossible.

As for filter on default that come into law. As already old BT broadband user the filter default never happens for me.

  • Alistair

BBFC was good passing games uncut, not so when it comes to films.

& now govt lead by a woman has sign up so she shows her true colour.

But I fear censorship will be the outcome of this. But it be hard to enforce.

If it just a Age gateway into porn sites, & must show the 18 in red circle then that fine.

If BBFC do what it does with films & censored them ten No I oppose it. Because if it happens freedom of speech & expression is finally dead in the water.

Censorship in films, censorship in video games If it not really the end of freedom of speech & expression. But it so close to it.

    • chris

in the end censorship will never work and this law seems unenforceable, also its not to late to change it the laws is only at the committee stage of Commons and still has a ways to go, still like I said I dont think they will block YouTube and other big sites, I dont even think they will go after them at the end of the day

      • Alistair

Thanks for the link? At least UK parliament is transparent.

        Not many gov are transparent.

I’m be keeping a close eye on that if it reach royal stage it mostly done & dusted.

And yes it will be real hard to police it as how can they rate films & sites too they just manage to rate games but other sites around the word.

& whatever happen to internet cant get censored.

  • durka durka

The funniest thing is Eu could have protected them from this due to freedom of speech laws being very high up in europe…cough, piratebay.

    • chris

I still think we are going to stay in the EU

  • C G Saturation

Humans didn’t seem to have much problem with adult content for the past tens of thousands of years. Suddenly, they feel they need to police us on it. Can’t see it as anything but strange and unnecessary.

I personally think that hiding the facts of reality from kids as they grow up increases the chances they grow up perverted in some way.

  • DDD-kun

    What rubbish.
