Daymare 1998, Horror Gameplay Footage Mirrors Resident Evil

Invader Studios’ upcoming horror game, running on the Unreal Engine 4, called Daymare 1998 is an over-the-shoulder, third-person action horror game. A large part of the gameplay is focused on trying to tie-in the gameplay elements for a HUD-free experience.

The core of the gameplay is quite similar to Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6. The camera sticks close to the main character, hovering almost claustrophobically close to their body. YouTuber MathChief posted up the new clip, featuring six minutes of gameplay and sponsored by online slots Canada. You can check it out below.

It starts off with the player character coming out of the elevator, investigating a room, getting a fuse, powering up the fuse box and opening the door. There are some zombies sprinkled about, but they’re killed rather quickly, just until a larger, deformed looking monster that looks like it took a bath in chemical waste, comes waltzing out of a shed and begins hounding the player down like a male feminist stalking and trying to rape any woman gullible enough to think that male feminists are allies.

The gameplay clip isn’t very long but we then get a look at a second short clip that lets gamers know that it’s a Kickstarter project.

Daymare 1998 doesn’t have the most memorable of names, but the gameplay looks like a solid continuation of what was introduced in Resident Evil 4. The weapons seem a little… finicky, and the standard zombies die way too quickly, but that’s nitpicking given that they could always upgrade those features ahead of its early 2017 release.

According to the official Invader Studios website, apparently this was borne out of the prototype they built for the Resident Evil 2 Reborn project. Capcom went on to announce an official Resident Evil 2 remake, so Invader Studios scrapped their project and turned it into Daymare 1998.

The game shows promise, so we’ll see if they can make something out of it and turn it into something real special when it releases in 2017.
