Styx: Shard Of Darkness Trailer Keeps The Cinematic Honest About The Game

Focus Home Interactive and Cyanide Studios released a new trailer for Styx: Shard of Darkness, featuring some cinematic cuts spliced together with actual gameplay to give the third-person stealth title some extra flair.

The trailer highlights the main protagonist of the game, Styx, and his ability to wield a wide assortment of stealthy gadgets and weapons in order to take down his foes. Unsurprisingly this earned the trailer the apropos title “The Art of Stealth”. You can check it out below.

The two minute trailer looks solid. We see Styx perform some dynamic kills using in-engine assets. Styx demonstrates his ability to go invisible; duplicate himself using clones; setup traps on the ground to work as makeshift mines, and even lift items off NPCs without them noticing.

The trailer culminates in Styx being able to create a room full of chaos while staying unseen. He nabs the crystal and makes his way out of the room.

Now here’s the really crazy part: everything you see him down in the trailer, you can actually do it in the game.

It’s rare we get a cinematic trailer that actually highlights actual gameplay. Most times it’s in-engine renders showcasing stuff you can never do, or a bunch of fancy CG built by a studio who does a darn good job of making cinematics but does a poor job of representing how the actual game will play, or in some worst case scenarios we get vertical slices of games that don’t even exist… and I’m not even going to put the -cough-cough- to hide the fact that Gearbox Software did just that with Aliens: Colonial Marines.

Anyway, you can look for Styx: Shards of Darkness to launch on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in March. It’s a shame it’s not a Nintendo Switch launch title because it would be a great way to add some genre diversity to the system’s launch line-up.
