Owlboy Announced For The Nintendo Switch

Nintendo announced that Owlboy will be releasing on the Nintendo Switch. The game was part of a reel of new indies set to arrive on Nintendo’s hybrid gaming device.

Destructoid spotted the news as part of the near nine minute trailer that was released as part of Japan’s promotion of new titles set to arrive on the Switch.

Destructoid notes that the Owlboy segment starts at the 6:30 mark, and sure enough it’s there.

Some people were curious why the game was first announced for release for Japan when it was released first in the West, but people are excited about the news nonetheless.

The game originally came out back on November 1st, in 2016 last year. It received remarkably high review scores for its high quality art and animation, and very enticing soundtrack.

The concept of the game is like that of a traditional platformer but evolved to the next level. The hand-crafted game features a diverse collection of levels and companions for Otus the owl boy to experience and explore.

As showcased in the video above, Owlboy is a perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch. It’ll offer games an HD pixel adventure on the big screen, and something worthwhile to play while the Switch is in portable mode on the small screen.

They haven’t set a release date yet for Owlboy on the Switch, but it’s likely coming with the second wave of indie titles due for release on the Switch during the second or third quarter.

Right now Nintendo’s two biggest hurdles to overcome are expanding the software library and getting more Switch units out onto the market. The console managed to beat the Xbox One and PS4 two months in a row during a non-holiday season stretch, so if they can keep that up they’ll be on their way to surpassing the Wii U’s install base in no time. The only thing they’ll need after that is more software to entice the growing install base.
