Reddit Subs Shut Down To Protest…Reddit
(Last Updated On: May 27, 2016)

There’s a Reddit revolt at hand. The social media site has been in a contentious firestorm over the right to free speech, information sharing and agenda pushing. For gamers, this all started last year in August when more than 20,000 comments were wiped off the face of Reddit. The reason? They were all in violation of Reddit’s rules. The real reason? Reddit mods and admins were attempting to cover up the corruption of their friends. Well, things have taken an even bigger turn as more than 150 sub-Reddit forums have gone on blackout in protest of the way Reddit’s administrators have been running the site.

According to Tech Raptor things exploded when one administrator who handled “Ask Me Anything” events was abruptly fired for reasons unknown. This event spawned the hashtag TheDarkening as various major sub-Reddits went dark in protest of Reddit’s administrators firing “chooter”, real name Victoria Taylor. It’s hazy what really happened and the story surrounding her firing is confusing and vague.

According to Taylor, she mentioned that “You guys know what I know”.

Many of the moderators couldn’t get answers, thus they blacked out their subs. According to /r/PaoYongYang, more than 150 subs have been made private in protest, which you can see via the screen cap below.

The sub /r/gaming, a sub with more than 8 million subscribers, joins other major default subs such as /r/iama, which houses 8.5 million subscribers, /r/pics and /r/todayilearned, both of which also have more than 8 million subs, as well as plenty more with well over several million subscribers – all of them going dark.

Many have gone from calling this #TheDarkening to #RedditRevolt.

One of the moderators, allthefoxes, commented about making the subs go dark, stating

“A lot of people are saying ‘well they are throwing a temper tantrum, shutting down the subreddits isn’t the right’

“Well, what would you do? Talk to them? We’ve been trying that for years.”

In a somewhat ironic turn of fate, one of the moderators turned over a 20,000 subscriber sub to /pol/, a radical chan board.

The whole thing has created a lot of cheers from Kotaku in Action because people are finally taking the red pill and waking up to reality.

Whether or not this will actually have long lasting effects or if people will calm down, become complacent and go back to accepting the agenda-pushing, information blocking and free speech trampling by Reddit remains to be seen.

Some people are actively pushing Reddit users toward the alternative Voat.co. However they’ve been having trouble handling all the traffic from people abandoning a regime whose leaders seem to have set fire to the flags of oppression in their office while trapping themselves inside.

This may not be the final blow to Reddit but it comes awfully close.
