Croteam held to their promise of announcing the brand new game that Devolver Digital teased just ahead of E3. The game is Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope and it’s an arcade shooting rendition of the popular FPS title, specifically designed for virtual reality headsets, including HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.
The single-player shooter is currently playable and stable, but Croteam wants to iron out the bugs and flesh out the content, so Serious Sam VR will be entering into Early Access this summer.
There’s a teaser trailer for Serious Sam VR, which is only 42 seconds long and features some floating guns blasting around the screen, killing tons of baddies and creating enough gore to make Ed Boon blush. You can check it out below.
Technically a lot of the gameplay and visual themes seems similar to Serious Sam: Before The First Encounter, except the big difference is that the VR mechanics will allow players to freely move around the weapons to shoot using the VR controllers.
According to the Steam page, the team has plans on adding in more enemies, more weapons, more bosses, more power-ups, more shielding ability, and new difficulty modes. They also have plans on introducing a brand new skill-tree, which will be an all new feature for the Serious Sam series.
There aren’t a whole lot of other details let loose for this new VR experience, but we do know that you will need a VR headset if you want to play Serious Sam VR: The Last Hope.
For some gamers I imagine this news will be very exciting if they have a VR headset but no good games to play on it, while others who are desperate fans of Serious Sam might be disappointed that the newest game is relegated to VR devices.
My only gripe is the fact that there are disembodied hands. I’m not entirely sure why VR games have been keen on removing the hands from the rest of the body (or in this case having the guns without the hands) but that seems to be a theme for many of the FPS titles designed for VR headsets.
