Red Dead Redemption Is Now Playable On Xbox One

It’s been a long time coming, but the backwards compatibility for all versions of Red Dead Redemption have been made available for the Xbox One.

Rockstar sent out word on their website informing gamers that the open-world Western can be played on Microsoft’s latest home console. Earlier this week they announced that the game would be available as a backwards compatible title starting July 8th and they’ve kept to their word.

If you have any Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption, including the Game of the Year Edition or the standalone DLC Undead Nightmare, you can put the discs into the slot of the Xbox One and have the games install. This will proceed to download the titles onto the Xbox One’s hard drive.

You will need around 8GB to 10GB free on your hard drive, so if you’re filled up with games you may have to start picking and choosing what you want on the disk.

Shortly after the news broke this week that Microsoft and Rockstar had reached a deal where Red Dead Redemption would be available in full for the Xbox One, the sales for the game absolutely skyrocketed across various retailers carrying both physical copies of the game and digital download codes. If you’ve never seen or played the game, YouTube user vvar pidgeon has an awesome trailer that nicely sums up the game without spoiling it. Check it out below.

In fact, on Amazon U.K., the sales shot up by more than 6200% and on the U.S., version of Amazon the sales for the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption blasted up by more than 600%. Obviously the Brits are more interested in playing this game on the Xbox One than Americans are.

Even still, the news has sent a shock wave through the console gaming sphere, getting Xbox owners all nice and geeked up for their journeys back into the Wild West.

Red Dead Redemption is a melancholy tale of redemption for former outlaw John Marston. It’s a game that won multiple awards when it released years ago, and gamers have been begging Rockstar for a sequel ever since. Rumors have swirled for a third game in the series but so far nothing official has been announced. It would have been really big and really awesome had Rockstar made the announcement during E3, but these days Rockstar is a lot bigger than E3 and they do things their own way.

You can pick up a copy of the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption right now or install the game onto your Xbox One if you already have a physical copy of the game. Alternatively, you can pick up a digital copy from the Microsoft Xbox Store.
