Riptide GP: Renegade Adds Cops And Transforming Watercraft

The next generation Riptide GP game from indie developer Vector Unit is called Riptide GP: Renegade. They’ve been working on this project for a while now and it’s designed specifically for eighth generation home consoles, PCs and the Nvidia Shield and it’s set to officially release on July 26th for PC and PS4 first.

Vector Unit recently sent out word announcing that the game will take full advantage of today’s graphical technology and advancements, as well as offering gamers pristine handling and improved stunt systems over the previously released entries in the series.

They built the game from the ground up for high-end systems so it should look and play very differently from the earlier Riptide GP titles. According to CEO and Creative Director Matt Small, he stated in the press release that they wanted to turn everything up a notch while also maintaining what made the series popular with the niche racing audience in the first place, saying…

“With Riptide GP: Renegade, we’ve cranked up the action to make it more of a classic arcade racer,” […] “It still has the speed and dynamic water that players love. But the races are bigger and more explosive, with transforming vehicles, interactive obstacles, and secret shortcuts.”

Transforming vehicles? Now that sounds like the game has taken on a whole new level of cool. Vector Unit sometimes gets some grief for recycling simple concepts across PCs and home consoles with their racing titles, but at the end of the day if I’m having fun with a game I paid for then I’m not going to throw grief at a developer, and in the case of Riptide GP2 I had a lot of fun playing the game, unlocking new jet bikes and mastering stunts. So it’s all good in my book if they can take that core concept and annex new gameplay elements, mechanics and fun factors onto a model that has clearly worked for them thus far.

The futuristic racer will feature all new modes and play factors, including cops, an expanded career mode, up to eight players online, asynchronous ghost racing challenges and the return of the local split-screen multiplayer options.

You can keep track of the game by visiting the official website or keeping your eyes peeled on the Steam store page. You can look for it to launch on July 26th for the PS4 and Steam, and on August 2nd for Android TV, Nvidia Shield and the Apple TV. Following that Riptide GP: Renegade will be available for the Xbox One, Windows 10, iOS and Android smart devices. The PC and console version of the game will be $14.99 and the mobile version will be $9.99.
