Tomb Raider Movie Set To Launch In March, 2018

A movie reboot based on a reboot of Tomb Raider is set to launch in March, 2018. They already have a star lined up in Alicia Vikander, from Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, and the director will be Roar Uthaug from The Wave.

Slashgear is reporting that the movie will portray a “younger” Lara Croft, so it’s either going to be like these rebooted games under the Square Enix label, or maybe it’ll be like Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation, where Lara starts off in her mid-teens kicking butt, taking names, and escaping falling boulders.

Lara in Tomb Raider IV was decidedly far tougher and more of a go-getter than the Lara portrayed in the two newer rebooted games from 2013 and 2015, respectively.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

My biggest issue with the new Lara is that she’s terribly whiny and concerned greatly about the well being of her friends, but doesn’t hesitate to mow down hundreds of guys… just barely removed from crying while doing so.

The new games were made to appeal to third-wave feminists, but their tone and characterizations are inconsistent and off balance. Hopefully the new movie from Uthaug will be closer to the Angelina Jolie films, which despite being goofy and corny, were at least fast, fun and lighthearted.

In fact, the Jolie Tomb Raider films, from 2001 and 2003, are closer to what the Uncharted video games are like. It boggles my mind how Naughty Dog managed to capture more of the spirit of Tomb Raider than Crystal Dynamics were able to do.

Anyway, the only thing I’m curious about is if this will be a fun PG-13 action-adventure romp, or will it be a grim-dark survival tale like the rebooted games? I also wonder if they’re going to go full SJW with their portrayal of Lara… or will they reinvent her in the image of what made her popular in the first place? Time will tell.
