Witcher 3 Game Director Says The Free DLC Was To Fight The System

During this year’s E3 a number of interviews were conducted as media and content creators made their way around the L.A. Convention Center in Los Angeles, California for the biggest trade show event of the year. While attending the event, Based Gamer managed to get in word with one of the people responsible for bringing The Witcher 3 to life.

In Based Gamer’s video interview with Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the game director for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, he explains that one of the reasons they did the letter expressing their gratitude to gamers is because they’re gamers, too, and they want to treat their players the way they would want to be treated by other companies.

You can check out the short three minute interview below.

The real golden nugget was his response for the free DLC.

When asked why they decided to give away The Witcher 3’s DLC for free, Tomaszkiewicz responds, saying…

“Well, you know… it’s fighting through the system, because people usually use DLC for armor for the horses, new items, new swords, and different things. They [are] charging people for it, and we wanted to give people these things for free to show that we care about them”

It’s true that a ton of games these days have mictrotransactions and in-app purchases that sometimes borderline on electronic gambling. It’s become a real headache trying to get all of the content for some games due to so many different minuscule yet expensive DLC packs.

Even still, Tomaszkiewicz further explains that there were a lot of things they wanted to add to the finished version of The Witcher 3 but they didn’t have time. They used the free DLC as a platform to give the fans something extra without charging them for it. And they’ve been loved for that decision ever since.

Amid the ongoing cavalcade of controversy running rampant in the gaming industry at the moment, it’s sometimes great to see positive news coming out of the media sphere for once.

With that said, a lot of gamers are now absolutely head-over-heels in love with CD Projekt Red and cannot wait for more information on their next mature-themed project, which is Cyberpunk 2077.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its accompanying DLC is available right now for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
