Diaries Of A Space Janitor Makes Its Way Onto Steam

TinyBuild and Sundae Month’s Diaries of a Space Janitor has officially launched on Steam. The point-and-click adventure game sees players taking on the role of a small space alien working as a janitor in a large and bustling bazaar on an unfortunately unpleasant planet.

The object of the game is to to fulfill the duties of a space janitor, this includes picking up trash, collecting junk and keeping the streets of the bazaar clean from alien filth. And no, that last line is not a euphemism for killing evil aliens… it literally means cleaning up the filth various aliens leave behind.

The lo-fi 3D game is set with a bizarrely colorful world where everything blends, melds and comes together in an odd way that could best be described as visually intoxicating (for better or for worse).

The gameplay is setup just like your average point-and-click adventure and you can see what it looks like with a Let’s Play video below from YouTuber Checkpoint.

The game is about the struggles of attempting to escape from the rotten planet. Think of it like Star Wars Episode VII as if Rei never had Finn to come down and get the Emo-Troopers to force her to leave the planet of Jakku (though given her innate ability to concur up the power of the Mary Sue, she could have just as easily stolen the Millennium Falcon and escaped any time she liked).

Anyway, the theme of the game is about exploration and a sense of emergence. According to the user reviews, there’s no hand-holding. You just have to figure out how to do things on your own. Some part of the game reminds me a lot of Normality, which also had that self-discovery aspect to its gameplay, leaving players to figure out the extents of the world and how to take advantage of that to complete the game.

The developers are calling this an “anti-adventure” given that it follows the life of someone trying to escape from the middling mundanities of a menial life as a municipal meat-puppet. It seems like the kind of game that could end up being a sleeper hit if it plays well and more people take a liking to it. If you want to check it out for yourself you can do so by visiting the Steam store page. The game is available for $9.99
