For Honor Won’t Feature Online Split-Screen Play

Ubisoft had to cut the online split-screen play for For Honor after they concluded the four day alpha test. They uploaded a video over on their YouTube channel where For Honor producer Stephane Cardin explained that due to lag and other complications regarding streamlining the gameplay, they made the difficult decision to cut the feature.

The video can be viewed below and clocks in at seven minutes.

Cardin explains that while 99% of matches using the matchmaking feature was found within 20 seconds, but they still needed to tweak the filter regarding experience and skill because it wasn’t working so great. This also affected another they had problems with… split-screen and online play. Cardin says in the video…

“I forced also to make a very difficult decision. So we decided this week to cut the split-screen. It was a feature that we loved, but when we looked at what needed to be done to support online co-op, for us it was critical to make the decision now so we can polish all the features at the triple A level and that we have the most amazing experience.”

This left a lot of gamers in the comment section to question what the status was of offline split-screen? Was co-op play still possible against NPCs? Was versus modes still available?

The decision to cut the split-screen feature talked about in the video centered around online co-op, but it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to cut offline split-screen play when that has nothing whatsoever to do with online co-op.

I would surely like to hope that For Honor retains the offline split-screen option so people can invite over friends and duke it out just like in Dynasty Warriors games. It would be a real shame if they cut out that option working on the assumption that everyone would prefer online co-op.

The vagueness of the situation was enough to spawn headlines all across the internet with people lamenting the decision, but it definitely makes you wonder if Ubisoft will make a clearer announcement about the feature at a later date. They still have plenty of time given that For Honor doesn’t launch for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC until February 14th, 2017.
