Resident Evil 7 Won’t Feature Hand-Holding Tutorials

Some new gameplay footage for Resident Evil 7 popped up, featuring a look at some more mansion exploration and the creepy Baker family as they stalk and menace you through the equally creepy mansion.

As part of a lengthy preview session that IGN managed to get their hands on, the near nine minutes worth of gameplay footage takes place early on in the game where you’re just trying to get your bearings and understand what’s going on. You can check it out below.

They mention that early on players will have no idea what they’re doing. Unlike other AAA games where there are 30 minute tutorials hand-holding you from start to finish (or in the case of Assassin’s Creed 2, an entire game that pretty much plays out like one giant tutorial) Capcom took a decidedly different approach to Resident Evil 7, utilizing the player’s nouveau within the game world as a way to get them to explore and experiment by just playing.

They explain that the puzzles from the old Resident Evil make their way back into the game. And yes, the puzzles are elaborately complex.

In a way, the video gives away some important spoilers in the game, including some of the bosses and enemies that you will encounter. There are different areas in the game, including the main mansion, an old mansion, and a few other areas to explore.

The “game journalists” felt as if the upcoming horror title definitely did a lot right and that the more stripped-down, survival elements make it very scary and pulse-pounding.

I will admit, when they said that the game is “hands-off” and they don’t tutorialize you to death, I was instantly on the brink of falling in love with the game. I can’t tell you how much I hate the hand-holding in today’s AAA games. So Capcom going old-school and letting gamers explore and figure things out instantly raises the appeal level of Resident Evil 7… for me.

You can look for the game to launch for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One starting January 24th, 2017.
