Sonic 2006 Fan-Made Remake Available For Download

Sega’s Sonic 2006 release goes down in history as one of the all-time worst Sonic games ever made. From the glitchy physics to the glitchy scripts to the glitchy controls, everything about the game was just off-center. Well, fans took the time out to remake the game from scratch within the Unity 3D game engine, and you can download it right now… for free.

The Gistix team let loose the playable version of the first level. DSO Gaming spotted the trailer showcasing the game in action, which you can check out below.

You can download the Unity 3D version of Sonic 2006 from Google Drive or Mega NZ.

The current version of the game is only 189MB large, featuring the basic physics, enemies, Sonic and the Kingdom Valley stage.

You won’t need a hefty PC to run the game, with the minimum specifications being rather low:

  • Dual Core Processor
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000
  • 4GB RAM memory

You can use W,A,S,D to control Sonic and Space, X, and C as the ‘A’, ‘X’, and ‘B’ button.

They’re currently taking feedback from fans on what to improve, what to fix and how to make the game better as they implement more levels, add more mechanics and eventually flesh out and fix the game in a way that Sega never could. If you have downloaded the Sonic 2006 Unity 3D remake, you can offer feedback and tips over on the feedback forum.

Some people have praised Sega for not shutting down fan-made projects the way Nintendo has, but others pointed out that the greatest beat-’em-up game out there, Streets of Rage Remake, was actually shutdown by Sega after they finally completed it. A real shame because it’s endlessly replayable.

We’ll see how far the team gets with their remake of Sonic ’06 before Sega gets involved, whether it be positive or negative.
