Full Nudity, Softcore Porn Promised For Mass Effect: Andromeda’s Unattractive Characters
Mass Effect Andromeda Nudity

BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn took to Twitter to talk about the ESRB rating for Mass Effect: Andromeda and the fact that the upcoming title will – for the first time in the series’ history – feature a “Full Nudity” label instead of the “Partial Nudity” label.

It’s a strange way to draw interest to Mass Effect: Andromeda at this stage in the game.

Promising “full nudity” as if it were a feature usually works best when there are characters that people actually want to see nude. Generally if you want to use sex appeal as a selling point you actually need sexy characters.

For instance, 2B in Nier: Automata has a lot of sex appeal, and it’s not even something Platinum Games or Square Enix promoted… it’s just based on her design and the way the audience have generally taken a liking to her. The game itself doesn’t have any actual sexual content but the community have gone out of their way to create lots of sexy fanart and 3D renders of the pseudo protagonist 2B.

Now unlike Nier: Automata, the Mass Effect: Andromeda cast have not been as sexualized in the community. In fact, just the opposite has happened: a lot of people across the internet have said the cast in BioWare’s title are “ugly“.

Mass Effect: Andromeda - Romance

What’s weird here is that a lot of the male members of the gaming community have literally said that they find the characters in Mass Effect: Andromeda unattractive, yet BioWare decides to tell people there’s a lot of nudity and sex in the game. Maybe they’re trying to appeal to a certain group who like unorthodox designs and lots of sex? It seems kind of fringe, but that’s a word that’s been used lately to describe a lot of BioWare’s choices since Dragon Age II.

So the question becomes: how can you use nudity and sex as a selling point for a game where people find the characters unattractive?

Don’t you need some sort of sex appeal in order to sell the concept of sex?

It’s also weird because people have been defending BioWare’s decision to make the characters less physically appealing (especially the females), with some of BioWare’s die-hard fans congratulating them on aiming for sexually unattractive designs. Some people even claimed that BioWare is simply focused on making more “realistic” looking characters.

For instance, there are corners of the community who think Peebee is cute, many others think Peebee looks manly. Regardless, BioWare has said that Peebee can be romanced. So what target demographic does romancing Peebee fit into?

Flynn simply could be joking about the softcore porn aspect of Mass Effect: Andromeda.

So far the one thing that a large majority of the gaming community have been vocal about is the lack of sex appeal from the characters, so I doubt BioWare would put a lot of focus on making sexually unappealing characters frequently nude.

Then again, maybe that’s how they’re able to escape with an ‘M’ for Mature rating for the game from the ESRB? If gamers have to sit through alien schlong and ugly Krogan butts, it’s entirely possible that the ESRB decided to simply give them a pass on the full nudity.

But… then again, maybe BioWare is getting experimental…. maybe Peebee’s “manly” facial features aren’t the only thing she has in common with human males… maybe the full nudity will show the “other” side of the Asari’s capabilities?

Even still, it’s odd that they would even bother to play up sex in a game where people find their characters to be generally lacking in sex appeal.

I guess we’ll find out how this all plays out when Mass Effect: Andromeda launches on March 21st for the PC, PS4, PS4 Pro and Xbox One. Some people won’t be buying the game regardless of how the characters look given that a portion of the gaming community have opted not to purcahse the title due to racist comments made by one of the designers working on Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Also, did they try to modify Sara Ryder’s look so she has features of a certain someone when it comes to the face shape, nose and lips?
