Indie developers Household Games have created a new type of beat’em up game, one with a hero that does not seek violence, or brutally beating his enemies to a pulp. No, this is a hero that has taken on the Way of the Passive Fist.
Way of the Passive Fist was inspired by cartoons from the 1990s, and this design choice becomes a lot more clear when you see the art style and the story. Way of the Passive Fist takes place in a dystopian futuristic world, where bandits and mutants roam the desert lands. You play as the Wanderer, a man equipped with a mechanical arm, and he uses it to passively defend himself against the violent enemies that attack him by slowly wearing them down with his awesome parrying skills. However, the Wanderer isn’t a complete pushover.
Way of the Passive Fist pretty much works around the concept of a dodge and counter-attack system. You must build up energy by defending, blocking, and dodging enemy attacks, and with every successful parry, and after you have built up enough energy you will be able to unleash your own powerful attacks by using the Wanderer’s mechanical arm. A few gamers saw the trailer and commented that Way of the Passive Fist’s gameplay looked really slow since the main focus is on counter-attacking, but the developers and early beta testers have reassured the community that the game is properly paced and very challenging.
