Mass Effect: Andromeda Lesbian Sex Scene Leaves Gamers Confused
Mass Effect Andromeda - Lesbians

There’s plenty of romance options in Mass Effect: Andromeda. In fact, there’s a complete guide on how to twinkle the eye and twitch the nose just right in order to catch that space heart fever. However, one particular romance has garnered quite a bit of attention for its… uhh… interesting depiction of inter-species space sex.

A bisexual blue Asari named Peebee can be romanced by both male and female Ryder characters. Some other characters are locked squarely into orientation affinities, but Peebee swings both ways.

Videos have surfaced of the Asari getting it on with both Scott Ryder and Sara Ryder in clearly NSFW sequences. The first video from RabidRetrospectGames shows the near three minute sex scene between Sara Ryder and Peebee, and it left gamers with a lot of questions.

So the first thing that everyone asked is: What is Peebee riding on?

Unless Sara Ryder is actually Saraph Ryder, the cowgirl position doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in the context of the scene.

BioWare had promised more full nudity and softcore sex, but a lot of gamers are complaining that SFM porn has been done better, especially given Mass Effect: Andromeda’s animations and the strange sexual interaction between Peebee and Sara.

Others are now wondering if maybe there was something else Peebee had working in her favor down below? Perhaps Peebee is short for something else? A retractable sexual utility maybe?

It turns out, the answer is a lot simpler: they recycled Peebee’s animations from Scott’s sex scene.

Gamer’s Little Playground has the full Peebee and Scott romance and at the 36 minute mark you’ll see that Peebee is actually riding and grinding Scott.

Instead of making separate sex animations for Peebee and Sara, they simply recycled Peebee’s grinding on Scott’s manhood for Sara, giving the impression that either Sara has something extra special going on down there, or Peebee has something extra special going on down there.

Either way, it’s the exact same scene just Sara and Scott’s models are replaced and the lighting is slightly different. You can also tell in the images below, Scott was obviously modeled with his mesh being a lot more snug to Peebee than Sara; basically Sara’s left arm is slightly more displaced than Scott’s as they’re holding onto Peebee’s back. It seems to indicate that Peebee’s sex scene was designed for Scott but copied over for Sara.

This is a bit of a far cry from the sex scene in Mass Effect 1, where the actual intercourse was left up to the imagination of the player, and BioWare wisely used silhouettes and short panning shots that faded in and out to black to give the impression of intimacy. Color strobing, blur effects and a bokeh filter help set the mood, while distinct color contrasts also helped with the artistic values of the scene.

YouTuber Fain has a two minute video of the male Shepard and Liara romance scene from Mass Effect 1, so you can compare the two.

The scene is obviously shot a lot better than Mass Effect: Andromeda, thanks to the lens flare, multiple light passes on the character faces and the more darkly lit environments; it contrasts the quality of the characters a lot better.

YouTuber Razvan Preda has a video showing the female Shepard version of the same scene. Even though BioWare obviously recycled the same animations between male and female Shepard in the original game, the major difference is that there’s a lot more ambiguity and cinematic tricks on display to limit embarrassing and stilted animations.

Surprisingly, that not-so-graphic lesbian sex scene is what caused Fox News to throw a hissy fit over sex and nudity in gaming. If they weren’t so wrapped up in harassment narratives I could only imagine what they would think of the bumping and grinding sex scene in Mass Effect: Andromeda?

Even still, the scene was tasteful enough that you weren’t left with as many questions or confusion as the scene between Peebee and Sara.

Whether for budgetary reasons or to avoid complaints about bestiality, BioWare exercised a conservative approach for some of the other inter-species relationships. For instance, they were actually a lot more discreet with the romance between Ryder and Vetra.

What’s surprising, though, is that BioWare did a fantastic job animating the scenes between Cora and Scott. Discreetness and ambiguity was thrown out the window, and it was pretty obvious they put a lot of time into the sex scene between the two characters.

Obviously, there are spoilers ahead, but if you want to see just how much time and effort they put into the romance sequence between the two, check out the video below at the 4:00 mark.

What’s so strange about all of this is that the scene above with Cora and Scott is just so distinctly antipodes to what was on display between Peebee and Sara. These kind of animation inconsistencies are rife within the play experience of Mass Effect: Andromeda, which is no surprise given how much attention the animations and character designs have received leading up to release.

You can experience all the uncensored, awkward space sex that your heart can handle now that Mass Effect: Andromeda has officially released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
