Nier: Automata 60fps Movie Fix Available Via PC Modders

There’s a new workaround fix offered for Nier: Automata’s 30fps capped pre-rendered movie scenes that play throughout the PC version of the game, which is currently available right now on Steam.

Over on the Steam forums, user Breedloved discovered that you can extract the movie files from Nier: Automata, double up their FPS to 60, and strip the sound from the game as well. You can then repackage the files and play the game with the proper 60fps speed.

There’s a tutorial on how to extract the USM files from Nier: Automata. You’ll first need a few tools, though, including: MediaTab, VGM Toolbox, Scaleform VideoEncoder, and FFmpeg.

YouTuber Jokupew offers a quick four minute walkthrough of how to use the tools to extract the files.

So first up, open up VGM Toolbox and drag in the USM files from Nier: Automata‘s folder into the VGM dialogue box.

Open up Notepad and follow the instructions in the video on how to set the quality of the video output.

Save the file as a .bat file to run it as a batch file.

As it’s explained in the video, this will convert the USM into an AVI format.

Use Scaleform video encoder to import the video that you just extracted into AVI format, and change the parameters that you want. Convert the video into a USM format, and you’ll be good to go.

Now one thing to keep in mind is that even if you do decide to convert the video and raise the frames per second, it won’t change the overall resolution of the videos, which are locked at 1600 x 904.

As some people have pointed out in the reviews and in the discussion threads, this most certainly does limit the overall quality of the video when you’re playing at any resolution higher than 900p. So for those of you running the game at 1080p, 1440p or 4K, the quality of the video will still output at 904p with an internal resolution of 1600 x 928. That’s just the way the dice fall.

On the upside, at least you’ll be able to raise the playback FPS to 60, so it should at least match the 60fps hard-lock of the gameplay and smooth out the pre-rendered scenes that were skipping and messing up at 30fps. Expect more mods to surface for Nier: Automata as the PC gaming community continues to pick the game apart and tinker with its insides.

Nier: Automata is available right now for PS4 and PC. You can pick up a digital copy right now from over on the Steam store page.
