Secret World Is Relaunching as an Online Action RPG And Going Free-To-Play

It’s official, The Secret World is evolving. A few players are okay with this, others are a bit frustrated that The Secret World is relaunching as Secret World Legends.

Secret World Legends isn’t just relaunching, it’s technically an entirely new game with reworked game mechanics, a new story scenario, and a whole new player experience. For players that are in the know and play MMORPGs often, this is nothing new. Most games go Free-To-Play eventually after the game has been out for several years. Before we talk more about the relaunch, take a look at the teaser trailer that I linked down below for Secret World Legends.

First off, what happens to all your precious loot? Well, the developers are working on a transfer system to bring some of your vanity items and other gear over to the new Secret World Legends server, but it isn’t clear yet how much will make it through. Will the old server stay up? Yes, it will and you can still log on and play your old characters and use your old gear, as well as use your Funcom points, however, since they are switching over to the new system, there is no telling how long those servers will stay up. The developer’s exact words from their FAQ page is as follows:

Will the old version of the game be playable?
Yes, the TSW servers will still be available to play. You will not be able to launch TSW via Steam though. If you are currently playing on Steam and want to continue after the launch of Secret World Legends, you can do so at: https://register.thesecretworld.com/account

The new Secret World Legends is utilizing a new action RPG combat system, a new item system, as well as a new progression system that the developers say is no longer compatible with the older outdated system. The point is to bring The Secret World up to date to match more modern standards of gameplay.

Additionally, the developers also talk about a new story filled with voice acting and an exciting new narrative. Furthermore, the developers also make a point by saying the new system will not be Pay To Win, you will be able to access and unlock all the content from within the game.

All other Grandmasters and subscriber content from the original Secret World will simply be transferred over to the new Legends Patron system. However, all story progress, created characters, and anything else related to the original Secret World server, will be lost/Stuck on the old server, because the developers say in the below FAQ quotes:

Do I need to create a new character to play Secret World Legends?
Yes, everyone will begin Secret World Legends with a new character. Secret World Legends makes some major changes to itemization and character progression that aren’t compatible with the old game.

Will all content from The Secret World be available in Secret World Legends at launch?
Secret World Legends will relaunch with the original eight adventure playfields, scenarios, and dungeons available immediately. In the time following the relaunch, we will release Tokyo, Nightmare Dungeons, Raids, and the rest of the content that is currently live in The Secret World.

One major difference is that the game is free to play for everyone. But just as importantly, Secret World Legends has updates befitting a modern-day action RPG. This includes a redesigned combat system to make action feel more natural, more intuitive systems to interact with, enhanced visuals, an improved flow of quests, and improved structure of the early game for new players.

What happens to my old TSW character?
They’ll continue to live on the old TSW servers, so you’ll still be able to log in and play them. You will not be able to play them on the new Secret World Legends server though. It’s a new experience and fresh start for everyone.

If you have further questions or you would like to learn more, head on over to the official Secret World Legends website. If you would like to learn more about why they decided to make this change, you can read their Letter To the Community for additional details.
