The Surge Goes Gold; Runs At 4K, 30fps On PS4 Pro

Deck13 and Focus Home Interactive’s The Surge has recently gone gold. This means that the core development of the game is complete and they’re prepping to launch the game this May.

In a press release Focus Home Interactive revealed that The Surge will run at dynamic 4K with checkerboarding at 30fps on the PS4 Pro, or you can choose to play it at native 1080p at 60fps on the PS4 Pro. They plan on releasing an update for the game that will enable HDR support.

The PS4 and Xbox One will likely be stuck at 1080p at 30fps. Of course, if you’re a member of the Glorious PC Master Race, this means you’ll be able to play at native 4K without checkerboarding and at a full 60 frames per second, or if you’re running multiple cards in SLI or Crossfire, you might even be able to achieve 120fps. A real gamer’s gamer standard.

The game is a third-person action game centered around body-horror modification and sci-fi themes centered around physical transcendence. The horror elements are what could make really stand out, and as pointed out by YouTuber Joab Gilroy, the game seems to do the horror quite well, even though it gets a few other things quite wrong.

I have no idea how they came up with assigning the jump button to a double tap of the sprint, but that’s a crazy control scheme right there.

I am pleased to know that farming doesn’t sound like grinding. You literally get what you see, and that will easily make the game highly replayable given that players won’t have to put in 30 hours in order to find some decent gear.

I think Deck13 could end up hitting it out of the park with a sleeper-hit in The Surge given that we don’t get many third-person sci-fi single-player games. We don’t get many body-horror games. And we don’t get many competently made Souls clones. So we’ll see how well this turns out for them, but they seem to have learned from their mistakes with Lord of the Fallen and have amped up their design in the right ways with the new game.
