2017 Vision VR Summit Awards Names Superhot VR As Top Pick

The winners of the 2017 Vision VR/AR Summit Awards have been announced. Spanning nine categories and 250 submissions, the top picks for this year’s awards went to a selection of games you may or may not have heard of, but for sure the best game of the selection was none other than the Superhot Team’s Superhot VR.

The awards were part of the festivities that took place as part of the Vision AR/VR Summit in Hollywood, California. It featured talks from Unity Technologies CEO, John Riccitiello, along with Facebook’s head of social VR department, Rachel Franklin, and evolutionary biologist, speaker and author, Richard Dawkins.

Regardless, the categorical awards for the nominees who were part of the VR summit are listed below.

Best Game – Superhot VR (SUPERHOT Team)
Best Cinematic VR – Zero Days VR (Scatter)
Best 360 Video – MIYUBI (Felix & Paul Studios, in collaboration with Funny or Die)
Artistic Achievement Award – Chocolate (Tyler Hurd)
Technical Achievement Award – Ghostbusters: Dimension (The Void and Hyper Reality)
Narrative Achievement Award – Zero Days VR (Scatter)
Best AR Experience – ProtoSpace (NASA)
Best VR Experience – ASTEROIDS! (Baobab Studios)
Social Impact Award – Out of Exile: Daniel’s Story (Emblematic Group, Atrevida Productions, True Colors Fund)

I have to be honest, I’m just not that into VR. It’s not that impressive to me… yet.

I do, however, have to admit that Superhot VR looks like a ton of fun, and after seeing it on UpUpDownDown, it almost did make me want to go out and buy a copy. You can check out the gameplay footage below to get an idea of what it’s like in action.

Based on the selections, it seemed inevitable that Superhot VR would come away as the winner. With the limitations centered on Unity 3D made titles, and a lot of the showcases being little more than tech demos, Superhot VR had to win.

Hopefully next year the VR offerings will be a lot more diverse and varied, giving gamers something more to sink their teeth into, whether it’s made with Unity or not.
