The Long Dark, Survival-Exploration Game Launches August 1st On PS4, XB1, PC

Hinterland’s The Long Dark will finally graduate from Early Access and the Xbox Preview Program on August 1st.

The announcement came with a really awesome release date trailer featuring a look at the winter-themed survival and exploration game. The editing is top notch, along with the use of the music in the trailer, featuring “The Curse” by Agnes Obel. You can check it out below.

The Long Dark has been in development at Hinterland Studio for the past three years. The game originally appeared on the Steam store in Early Access back in 2014, and now the first season, “Wintermute”, will launch in full on August 1st later on this year during the summer for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Both Xbox One and PC gamers have been able to play-test the game thanks to both Early Access and Microsoft’s Game Preview program for games in development.

The sandbox survival game made waves and gained a lot of positive feedback for the non-linear approach to survival and gameplay. This will also carry over into the game’s story mode, which won’t be available until August.

Creative director, Raphel van Lierop, took to the Xbox News Wire to talk about what the actual story mode will be about when it does launch, explaining…

“Wintermute is the story of bush pilot Will Mackenzie, and Dr. Astrid Greenwood, whose plane crashes in the middle of the Northern Canadian wilderness, in the aftermath of a mysterious geomagnetic event. Separated in the crash, Mackenzie and Astrid must find each other, while avoiding the hazards of a savage winter wilderness, and seeking explanations to this new “quiet apocalypse” they find themselves in.”

Like most other survival games, there’s permadeath, dynamic weather and wildlife, items to collect, food to cook, light to maintain, health kits to pick up, weapons to use, and gear to craft. The game has an interesting looking water-color, brush stroke filter to its art-style that helps give it a more distinct identity than some of the other survival games out there.

PlayStation 4 owners will be able to get a taste of The Long Dark for the very first time later this summer, while Xbox One and PC owners will be able to finally dive into the game’s robust story mode.

If you’re interested in checking out The Long Dark ahead of its official release, you can do so by either visiting the Steam store page or the Xbox Store.
