The Star Wars mod Imperial Assault for Arma 3 may have disappeared in an attempt to avoid being hit with a copyright strike, but a new mod has popped up for Bohemia Interactive’s military sim simply called the Arma 3 – Star Wars Mod. There’s a cool 23 minute gameplay preview of the mod in action, showcasing the sort of combat and mechanics a lot of gamers wish was in DICE’s original Star Wars: Battlefront, which came out back in 2015.
The 23 minute video was captured by YouTuber TheDevilDogGamer, and you can check it out in action below.
You can download the mod from over on the Steam Workshop page for Arma 3 right now.
The first few minutes of the video just covers a lot of the different units and props. One of the cool things is that you can actually go inside of the AT-AT walker units, and there are two levels to the AT-AT to carry troops.
You can setup scenarios with the units and play against other players or the AI.
The usable vehicles actually have the sounds from the movie, and there is even a fully rendered cockpit as well.
One of the really cool parts is that the X-Wing and other flyers actually have wing animations that extend and retract when the thrusters are activated.
Later in the video he switches to the proton turret and we get to see it in action briefly. The action then switches over to a Rebel commando, as he and the others take the fight to the Empire in a large field.
For this mod to be as intense and detailed as it is, the whole thing surprisingly runs a heck of a lot better than I thought it would. We also get a brief look at the Scarif map from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The detail in the Scarif map is scary accurate. Unfortunately there’s supposedly a memory leak in the map and a lot of scripting issues that causes major frame-rate drops and slowdown.
Even still, this seems to be the kind of Star Wars: Battlefront that gamers have been waiting for. If they could clean-up the memory leaks, condense the scripts and tweak the flight mechanics on some of the vehicles, this could be a huge thing.
Later on in the video we get to see some Stormtrooper gameplay where they battle it out on the landing platforms. When the FPS isn’t tanking and the controls are working smoothly, the whole mod seems really cool. The landing is still a little difficult to use but it’s about as close as you’ll get to a realistic take on Star Wars: Battlefront.
The video also previews Boba and Jango Fett. The mod creators ended up making it where the duo have some new weapons at their disposal in addition to flamethrowers and rockets, such as a dioxide grenade that poisons anyone who walks into the green mist.
The mod was posted up on June 11th and you might want to download the mod right now before Disney hits it with a cease and desist.
If you don’t want to support EA and DICE’s SJWism, you can grab the mod for Arma 3 right now from over on Steam Workshop.
