E3 2017: Metroid: Samus Returns, 2.5D Adventure Coming To 3DS In September

Nintendo is remaking Metroid 2 from the Gameboy for the Nintendo 3DS. The new remake is entitled Metroid: Samus Returns and it’s set to release later this year for the Nintendo 3DS on September 15th, 2017.

The game features some brand new gameplay mechanics and features, including taking advantage of the stereoscopic 3DS effects. They’ve also added new teleport stations that allows players to easily and quickly teleport to areas that you’ve already traveled to in the game.

Another new feature is the ability to free-aim using complete 360 aiming instead of the standard eight-direction aiming that was present in the old Gameboy game. You can check out the trailer for the game below.

During the Nintendo Treehouse Live event, we also learned from producer Yoshio Sakamoto that two of the composers who worked on the original Super Metroid for the SNES have come back for Metroid: Samus Returns. This is why the music is so similar to the classic entry on the game.

Additionally, new to Metroid: Samus Returns are enemies that have all new behaviors and attack patterns that fit in line with the new 360 aiming mechanics. So in the same way that there are new ways to attack and more advancements in the way players can utilize Samus’ arsenal, enemies will also be a lot more difficult.

Nintendo also worked with Mercury Steam in bringing all new abilities to Metroid: Samus Returns for Samus to use, along with being able to utilize some new weapon upgrades.

A lot of fans are probably a little peeved that Nintendo was a bit slow on the draw with getting out new Metroid games in a timely manner, especially for the 30th anniversary, which was placated with a fan game that Nintendo promptly had taken down with legal threats.

Anyway, fans of Samus Aran will get Samus Returns this year and Metroid Prime 4 at some point in the near future for the Nintendo Switch. Fans should be happy… right?

Last but not least, there will be an all new Amiibo released for the game, featuring a Metroid breaking out of its containment case. Additionally, the Metroid 2 Samus Amiibo will also be usable with the 3DS version of the game as well. The game will be available on September 15th for the 3DS, along with a special edition that comes with a reversible cover and a 25-song OST.
