Firebase Short Film Is A Gripping, Gory, Sci-Fi Thrill Ride

Neill Blomkamp’s Rakka really set the standard for the quality of short films made available on Steam. The follow-up, entitled Firebase, is the next entry in the Oats Studios Volume 1 series. It’s a lot gorier than Rakka but equally as badass.

The near half-hour short is better than most sci-fi thrillers and action flicks that have come out in recent times. The short is one of the coolest things you’ll see today, and it’s the thing that most game development studios wish they could come up with.

The 30 minutes short from Neill Blomkamp ramps up big time and then cuts off just as it’s about to get godly.

The first volume of Oats Studio’s short films will be free, and they’ve been slowly rolled out over on the Steam store.

You can stream the shorts or if you want to help support Oats you can buy the DLC assets.

What you do with the assets is up to you, but how cool would it be to see the Rivergod in various other games and projects like Garry’s Mod or used in SFM? Ehh… then again, scratch the SFM thing. If Five Nights at Freddy’s is anything to go by, you probably wouldn’t want to see what people use the Rivergod for in their Source Filmmaker projects.

Oats - The River God

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the rest of the volumes, and it’s sad that the only good sci-fi thrillers we get are from short films on Steam.

For crying out loud why couldn’t both Fireteam and Rakka get full funding to become full films? I would so pay to see them. It feels like most of the crap we get in theaters these days is unimaginative, boring and completely trite. Heck, hire Blomkamp to do the next Predator flick; get this guy on the next Aliens movie pronto, and also let him have a crack at Aliens vs Predator. We might finally get some decent movies out of all three franchises. But I digress.

If you haven’t already check it out, you can do so by watching the video above or streaming it through the Steam client.
