Open Discussion: June 11th, 2017
(Last Updated On: June 11, 2017)

Today marks this week’s edition of the Open Discussion series here on OAG. If you don’t know, this Open Discussion series explores different subjects or topics about anything — but more so about video games — and allows you to say anything related or unrelated to whatever is being discussed.

That’s right, you can speak whatever is on your mind in this series called “Open Discussion” where your opinion is more than welcomed. This series usually explores different aspects of the gaming industry and the direction that it’s headed.

I should note that if any of your comments face any form of censorship in that it is removed or blocked, please let us know so that we can restore the comment back to what it was intended to be when it was first submitted.

Now that you know what goes down regarding the rules for the Open Discussion, it’s time to move on to this week’s topic: E3.

For some people E3 is just an event that holds no merits, while there are other people out there who really do enjoy the convention in that they have to watch or attend the event.

E3 not only offers insight on DLCs, expansions, new projects and game engines, but new games in general. The event can hype up folks and gamers alike, but it can also be a glorified event for sub-par games for some people. However it stands with you, the event is here and currently going on and showing millions of people different video games and other products through stage presentations, expo videos and booths.

So with that said, is there a particular game, product or event that you are currently looking for to appear at this year’s E3? If not, did you already witness “the big moment” and you are now waiting it out to get your hands on it? Or are you just not interested in the event? Whatever it is that is on your mind you are more than welcom to share it along with thoughts that are unrelated to this week’s topic in the comments below.

i have no words to describe the dumpster fire that the bethesda conference was, holy fuck

Even the high points Evil within 2 and Wolfestein 2 look pretentious as heck, far more time devoted to artsy bullshit than gameplay, they look interesting at least

    • I’m more angry they made us wait forever and it was short and kind of pointless.

Skyrim on Switch looks kind of cool and I wish they would have demonstrated more of the motion-style combat because I wanted to see just how accurate it really is.

Leaving aside the fact that Battlefront triggers me with its ugly female lead, who on Earth would buy it after the first one? The first one had a 60 freaking dollar season pass if I recall correctly! It ended up having about $10 worth of half-assed, population dividing content, and I couldn’t even find a game if I wanted to play it after a few months.

Aside from A Way Out, there doesn’t look to be a whole lot here to pull me away from MOBAs and Overwatch. Speaking of, (well, not Overwatch) when did F2P games become such good value? I remember when they were all pay 2 win and going to be the scourge of gamers. Now, I have a little over 4k hours played in DotA for about 12 bucks, and something like 100 hours in HotS for 0 dollars. Even Overwatch is an F2P model basically, after the buy in. So unlike shit such as BF, you don’t have to pay for any future content, just loot boxes if you want them.

That’s a way to hide from the travesty the AAA industry has become. I’ve run to JRPGs and handheld gaming since the middle of the last generation, can still find some oldschool stuff there.

      • descent3031

Wish I liked JRPGs more. I always feel like I need more action in my RPGs, but then I find some turn based games that I can’t put down. There’re just so many damn JRPGs out there and no one’s opinion on which is good is trustworthy IMO, because they’re all sort of uniquely flawed… I think I’ll bite the bullet and drop the dollars on Persona soon though, I need something I can play by myself.

I’ve seen even people who don’t like JRPGs having fun with Persona 4. It’s a good choice. Don’t know about Persona 5 though.

If jRPGs feels to slow to you, maybe some aRPGs and metroidvanias can suite your pace. To me it depends on my mood, sometimes I want fast paced fighting games or hack n slash stuff. Other times I’m up for 4 hours of a single battle in a Strategy Turns jRPGs.

I’m not much of a multiplayer person, most of my enjoyable multiplayer experience is co-op with friends. Guess that’s why I’m not much into MOBAs and FPS arenas. Had my phases at World of Warcraft PvP, Team Fortress and Smite though. Most recent was Heroes of the Storm. Got somewhat interested in Overwatch but not much in the mood for this kind of game recently, probably will give it a try next time I get some Team Fortress cravings.

I’ve decided that my problem is twofold.

I don’t quite know what I like. My perfect game is TW3 or Ocarina of time. So as I said, I always think I need that action and polish, yet I absolutely adored both Banner Sagas, and XCOM, which are both slow burn tactical affairs.

My second problem is that I currently have little disposable income, so I’m loathe to purchase something that I’m not sure I will like.

Perhaps you’re right that I should look at 4 first, I’ve never played a Persona and it’s sure to be a fair bit cheaper for the purpose of dipping my toe.

Regarding Overwatch, it does thoroughly scratch that TF2 itch for me, but it has the drawback of not being a massive clusterfuck like TF2 was. People take it too seriously most of the time and it’s only 6v6. I like it quite a bit, but I don’t exactly play it every day either.

          • Mr.Towel

TW3 and OoT are masterpieces, they’re a class of its own. Maybe you like more polished experiences? These are hard to come by at the jRPG field, they’re used to be designed around abstraction.

I definitely understand the monetary issue. I’m currently living in a Third World Country and here even if you’re earning fat money the government still manages to make you feel poor. Because taxes. Taxes are the trademark of Banana Republics. Just to give you an idea how bad things can get, when PS4 released around here it was priced at the equivalent of 1,800 american dollars, 4x as expensive as in USA. Coz taxes.

PC gaming and steam deals can save the day though, that’s why PC gaming is more popular around these parts. I’m also glad that Steam deals kind of forced Xbox and Sony to up their game and start offering digital deals of their own, not as cheap as Steam but sure does help.

Not really interesting in E3 in and of itself. Some interesting games will be announced, but I don’t care, especially if the trailers don’t include gameplay.

I played the first hour of Mad Max. Do most new games start out as one long tutorial? It was boring. The fighting was like Arkham Asylum, but not as bone crushing. Is everything behind some sort of ‘you need to go through more missions’ barrier? It’s like when you go on a website, but it won’t let you look at anything until you turn off adblock or pay a subscription, so it’s like a shitty website. It’s an open world with none of the freedom.

There is a reversed engineered source port for Blood, BloodGDX. It’s still having things like voxels and polygons added sometime in the future.

for a while it seemed like that was going away and then it came back STRONG, Japanese games are by far the biggest offenders

I’ve always hated forced tutorials, especially when they go on and on and on.

God yes, the most baffling one I’ve come across recently is in HotS. You have to play it, even if you told the game you’re a veteran when you made the account. It has cut scenes that you can skip, but you can’t skip the tutorial itself. That’s mental, there’s no reason to ever do it more than once, but they seem to acknowledge that you are by allowing you to skip cut scenes.

(If anyone is aware of a way to skip the tutorial, then I stand corrected and foolish.)

        • So that’s like half of the entire gameplay of almost every Ubisoft game.

RE Mad Max. It starts incredibly slowly. It does get better in some ways, and worse in others. The races are fucking tedious, the survival mechanics are half-assed at best, and a large amount of stuff on the map has nothing of value within it. However, the driving is super fun once you unlock some more stuff for the car and the combat ramps up quite a bit in the later parts of the game.

I wouldn’t say that the start not grabbing you should definitely be enough to put you off the rest of the game, but I also wouldn’t say that I enjoyed the rest of the game enough to give you a thorough recommendation. I enjoyed the game best when I hooked the PC up to my T.V, lay on the couch with my own music playing to make up for the non-existent soundtrack, and kicked back for a few hours.

      • Hawk Hopper

I played that small part of it while I was at a friend’s house. It didn’t leave a good enough impression on me to pick it up again. I also really enjoy gaming while listening to music or a podcast or whatever, but GTA V or Burnout are usually my picks for doing that.

I’m a few hours in. Haven’t hit the point where Mad Max is interesting.

I’m loving all the Blood remakes and redos, also a big fan of the two Daggerfall projects.

Wish someone would do a modern remake of Exhumed/Powerslave.

      • Hawk Hopper

Somebody did make an enhanced version of Powerslave (the PS1 edition), but it was taken down.

I actually forgot about that one, it wasn’t too bad. I liked that it was based on the PS version.

Bioware doing the division fake communications shit on their destiny+titanfall rip off, thumbs up

    • That game will probably get downgraded to crap by the time some real gameplay gets shown. None of that is possible on the current Xbone.

btw, maybe i am drunk, but did they say the name of the main character is “Black” ?

          • Dang, I wasn’t paying attention to his name. The atrocious combat distracted me. He definitely sounds like a black guy voicing him, though.

I remember triggering a SJW on a website. They tried to make an egyptian queen black. I tried to explain that the skin color and general appearance would largely depend on the family they were part of and the time period. They basically said Cleopatra was actually black. When I explained she was of the Ptolemic line she was actually Greek, they went freaking off.

          • Mr.Towel

SJW historic timelines makes no sense. Persians/Proto-Arabs were the first people to employ race based slavery exactly because deep black African skin was different from their own. They even castrated their black male slaves to avoid mixing their skins.

But on the SJW mind it seems all brown people are the same. Talk about being racist….

          • descent3031

On that theme, I was arguing with two people about the so called white-washing of Ghost in the Shell. I was pointing out that the Japanese version already exists, you can go see it any time if you need Japanese only people to enjoy it. Scar-Jo was picked for the movie because they wanted a superstar. Now I don’t rate Scar-Jo, or the movie for that matter, but it’s not racist. So they asked, why not pick a big name Asian actor? I said “Like who??” The answer.. Lucy Liu.. How can they not see that this is way more likely to piss off the Japanese and is certainly more insensitive?

SJWs are the MOST racist. By far. We all know that, though.

Example of a gamer at the start of the show ? a woman
the 2 players playing forza ? 2 women

yeah, i can tell when i am not welcomed

i am surprised Spencer is not rocking some boobs and a skirt

That’s basically how they’ve made me feel for most of my life. It’s like they’re constantly emphasizing “You have to be a woman to enjoy anything”. Probably part of the reason why ads don’t work on me.

I always feel confident that nobody’s gonna make the kind of games I really want, so I’m never excited about this stuff anymore.

Speaking of games, Nioh finally got discounted, so I was mulling over buying it or not, but decided not to. I looked up pros and cons and realized that the common complaints are all the kind of things I really can’t stand:
    – Heavy reliance on RNG to hide the lack of content.
    – Lack of enemy variety, once you learn how to defeat them it gets pretty dull.
    – Very bad level design, generally linear except for the last two areas which are meaninglessly convoluted and confusing.
    – So many items drop that you have to spend tons of time sorting your inventory.
    – You basically can’t use Okatsu until after you beat the main game AND farm assloads of Glory that’s tedious to earn offline, and I don’t want to buy PS+.

    – Music isn’t great, they apparently use the same track for all the bosses.
    – A friend tells me weapons break all the time like in Zelda BOTW.

I might buy it if it gets a much larger discount. I might even have bought if there was a demo available for me to try, but for some reason game companies like to make demos limited time only now. Their f**king loss.

  • Mr.Towel

Gotta admit, I never expect anything from EA’s conference. Since their whole existence they never impressed me, hyped me, surprised me or showed anything really interesting to me. I went to watch it expecting the same old boring stuff. And for 99% of the conference it was that…

    A Way Out though…

Now I really do believe there’s a first time for everything.

    • descent3031

I was hanging out for some shock announcement of a new Fight Night, other than that I was definitely not expecting much out of EA. A Way Out comes as a pretty welcome surprise. Here’s hoping there’s a lot of opportunity to bonehead in the background of your friends cinematic!
