The End Is Nigh, Apocalyptic Platformer Hits Steam On July 12th

Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s upcoming post-apocalyptic platformer The End is Nigh is set to release on July 12th next month on Steam. The teaser trailer for the game is absolutely hilarious, featuring a mock live-stream of a blob playing the hard-as-nails platformer. Things start off pretty tame, as the blob, presumably known as Ash, attempts to make his way through each of the levels, only for the game to crash.

The best moment of the trailer comes at the midway point where the blob begins blowing into the cartridge in hopes of getting the game to work again after it crashes. A sequence of awesome platforming segments situated in post-apocalyptic environments set to Verdi: Requiem’s “Dies Irae” begins to blare over the horn. You can check out the very impressive looking teaser trailer below.

The remix of “Dies Irae” is flatout epic. If the rest of Ridiculon’s soundtrack is composed similar to that while you play, then The End is Nigh could end up going down in history as one of the most hardcore, stress-inducing platformers of all time with some cool audio and visuals.

The game promises more than 600 challenging levels, more than 12 different chapters, 20 different collectibles with added mini-game cartridges that you can acquire, 80 different achievements, lots of different endings. They also press… stress.

Based on the trailer alone it definitely looks like the kind of game that will frustrate players to no end.

Unlike a lot of other indie devs out there, McMillen and crew had to work hard to earn respect from the gaming community with games like Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac.

I don’t know if this is the kind of game I would play, but it looks pretty challenging and the whole apocalyptic motif is really cool looking. There aren’t many platformers set during the end times.
