Cammy’s Street Fighter 5 Default Outfit Was Banned On ESPN Due To Broadcast Standards
EVO TOP 8 Cammy Censorship
(Last Updated On: July 18, 2017)

We finally have a reason as to why the default green leotard outfit that Cammy has been wearing in Street Fighter games since her debut in Super Street Fighter II back in 1993, was banned during the live broadcast of the Top 8 EVO 2017 finals for Street Fighter V on ESPN 2: It was due to broadcast standards on cable television.

We reached out to ask if the outfit change during the middle of the match between NuckleDu and Kazunoko was something that the EVO organization enacted or if it was something that ESPN had put into place as part of their broadcasting standards. According to an e-mail from the representative, it was due to broadcasting standards…

“Yes, [ESPN] were simply abiding by broadcasting standards”

We recently reported that regular Cammy player, Kazunoko, was asked in between sets to change Cammy’s outfit while he was going against NuckleDu during the live broadcast on cable television. Masked Gaming Entertainment recorded the segment, and it takes place at the 6:50 mark in the video below.

A staff member from EVO raced up on stage after Kazunoko finished the match and quickly advised him to go back to the character select screen. Kazunoko was clearly confused at first. The staff member then advised him to swap out outfits to something more suitable for the broadcast, so Kazunoko picked Cammy in her Capcom Pro Cup Tour dress with spandex shorts underneath.

Some people have claimed that this is a double standard given that ESPN hosts lots of sporting events with women in leotards, such as gymnastics, as well as beach volleyball, which also features women in rather skimpy two piece bikini swimsuits.

However, this wasn’t the first time that a character’s outfit had to be censored for the live broadcast on national cable television. R. Mika’s default outfit was also banned from being used during the Top 8 finals during EVO 2016, which was also broadcast on one of ESPN’s channels.

Worries are now mounting that perhaps this could lead to less sexy outfits for the female fighters in the future as attempts are made to make fighting games and the FGC more mainstream. A similar thing happened with Dead or Alive 5 in the tournament scene, where players were banned from using some of the more risque outfits for the female fighters, thus killing off a lot of the interest in the game in the e-sports scene, as reported by Reaxxion.

If Street Fighter V or any other top fighting game manages to make it back to air on ESPN next year during EVO 2018, expect the standards to stay in place and for the female fighters to only appear in their more covered-up attire to avoid any controversy.

Thats what they get for coming within a mile of ESPN.

It may seem like a big deal for eSports to be on cable, but it will only end up hurting it (or, at best, have exactly zero effect overall) connecting itself with a channel which is a pit of cancerous evil.

If i was EVO, i would tell them to air it as is, or go back to being irrelevant with its WNBA coverage, and social justice talk shows.

ESPN is where sports go to die.

  • PizzaWolf

If Cammy was a land whale they’d call her ‘so brave’ for wearing such an outfit. I’m tired of this shit. If I was on stage playing EVO top 8 I would tell those people to fuck off, then make a HUGE stink if they even tried to disqualify me. ESPN and cable TV be damned. Something as simple as an outfit change could have major effects on a player’s mindset.

  • CatCouch

If these tournaments get really big, what’s going to happen to games like Mortal Kombat? If these tournaments become large televised events where Cammy is violating broadcast standards what does that mean for violence?

I’m sure Mortal Kombat’s sales mean it doesn’t need tournaments but I wonder if this will affect the decision to make games like it. Like, would it be smarter for NetherRealm to keep pushing Injustice up to tournament levels and stop focusing on games that can’t be aired by these standards? There seems to be a hope here that the tournament audience will become the main audience as FG’s never had the strongest sales.

    • That’s a good question.

They already censor the Fatalities on major e-sport broadcasts when showing MKX or MKXL. If e-sports really is the future for fighting games, NetherRealm may either be inclined to tone down on the violence, or make an e-sports ready mode where the blood and gore is turned off (almost like the original Mortal Kombat on home consoles).

      • CatCouch

I hope that as tournaments get bigger there is a compromise reached, like having alternate costumes and toggles for blood and gore. Those things are options and add variety, which we can all agree is mostly good.

I can see no good come from toning down the art by changing camera angles or removing characters like Felicia from MVCI. That just causes backlash. I think these games need better word of mouth than they have if they want tournaments to catch on with a bigger audience. Censorship fights will be a big turn off (toning down MK for TV would likely kill the franchise, anyway).

I’d be interested in seeing how different the reactions would be if Mortal Kombat got hit like SFV here. Would people react differently if violence was at stake instead of just sex appeal?

        • Interesting hypothetical there.

Mortal Kombat built its legacy on blood and gore, so if that was ultimately censored for the franchise moving forward, I do wonder if there would even be an audience for the series thereafter?

Street Fighter was never really built entirely on sex appeal the way Mortal Kombat was built on gore and violence. Yet the pushback and spite toward the franchise over things like camera angles and cutaways has been fairly significant.

So I would imagine that Mortal Kombat could lose a significant portion of its market (and tons of mind share) if they did decide to permanently “tone” things down for e-sports.

Let’s be clear – as a company, ESPN has the responsibility not to offend conservative mothers who may raise an uproar and cause them to lose sponsorship. This is called capitalism. <—–Don't blame liberals for any of this.

    • Mr.Towel

ESPN is not fearing the prospect of soccer moms screeching on the phone. This isn’t the 80s. Tipper Gore is an old bag, ESPN covers beach volleyball and softcore wrestling in broad daylight. Mom knows which games their son is playing and he will play leotard Cammy in the middle of the living room alright.

The problem is libtard feminists screeching on their vegan blogs and neckbeards youtube channels. That’s what ESPN fears in this day and age.

      • Anthony Kees

The video games industry has its fight regarding the industry vs feminist, but don’t pretend the feminist movement has nearly the impact Christianity does.

Broadcasters fear mothers complaining to the FCC, religious/conservative inspired boycotts, and advertisers being pulled. Don’t pretend sex repressed religiosity died in the 80s, just look at every summer Olympics for examples of the religious-conservative outrage against women showing skin. Just look at Rick Santorum’s (and others’) fight against pornography.

When a TV network is concerned about “offending” someone with nudity, that is 100% due to our culture being a sex repressed christian nation. (THANK YOU to liberals for helping us move away from this.)

And just because you may not be a sex-repressed person yourself does not mean conservatives don’t still own this… Christianity, and the sex repression which comes with it, is still a cornerstone of conservatism.

Conservatism/religiosity and sex repression go hand-in-hand. Just look at ANY liberal country vs a conservative country, and check out what their women wear to the beach.

        • Mr.Towel

I know about all of this. Sex repression was the greatest burden Christianity gave to the world, by far. And this shit still happens, in somewhat large numbers.

But at the scale it happens today is by no means its leading cause. In every portrayal or report from self-righteous Christians complaining about nudity you will find a mockery tone in every reply imaginable. Nobody from big metropolitan areas cares about this shit anymore, not even christian themselves. Most of the self-righteous christian stuff today exists in closed-off low income communities, which certainly aren’t huge clients for private cable networks. At the last Rio Olympics, for every christian complaint I saw about skin I heard 10 more complaints about how sexist the women’s uniform were. At websites owning much higher page view count and influence than any Pastoral Association from Redneck America United™. It’s even more rare for modern Christians if we’re talking about sports related culture, which is male dominated and most women don’t even notice this shit exists, it’s something their husbands do and watch and the women just don’t pay attention to it. Highschool Cheerleaders existed through all the christian dominated 20th Century and ironically, we only started hearing complaints about them from feminists getting triggered by high kicks on short skirts, not Christians.

When self-righteous Christians complain about something today, companies will follow suite just to save face, but they are quick to go back on their words some months ahead. Their sponsors, which are usually hip corporate companies, don’t care either. The journalists who report on it won’t care either. And most of their readers won’t care either.

If you get on the crosslines from an influential feminist though… you better start praying. For almost all of the journalistic establishment will turns their blades against you and all the coverage you will receive from there till the end will be negative, even from major news outlets. Sponsors will have to drop you to survive even if they agree with you. Your only chance of survival is lowering your head and bending over to their demands.

Here’s the thing about capitalism and corporations: They answer only to mainstream culture. That’s why capitalism can be free and advanced or oppressive and dystopian. It depends on the society’s culture at which the capitalism model is working upon. If the mainstream culture is fucked up, its capitalistic model will be fucked up. And exactly right now, christian culture is not the dominant culture. While they were on the past, even recent past, they aren’t anymore. Christianity is not the main establishment anymore, rather, the new left have become the new establishment, by its grasp on popular culture and almost all forms of information media imaginable. They’re the ones calling the cards right now, they’re the ones who have the biggest power of influence on current society and that’s exactly why Cultural Wars are an actual thing.

If ESPN has any brains left, they’re certainly answering to modern journalists, not mocked Christians. Otherwise they would be following suite on other sporting events which show a lot of skin. But they aren’t, they are going only for games, because “video games are sexist” is the current narrative and it’s from this perspective that they are choosing to act upon games but not the rest.

Why is EVO even on ESPN anyway?

  • This game just cannot get away from censorship, can it? If I was Kazunoko, I would’ve told them to get fucked, possible DQ be damned.

    • Alistair

If that was me, I will say noting, get up, put controller on the chair and walk off. On live TV.

Then they suffer a awkward moment. 😋

      • CatCouch

It’s probably a stupid career move but I would applaud anyone who did just that!

        • The thing is, his sponsors may not applaud him for that move. As you mentioned it’s not just a stupid career move… it could end up being career suicide.

          • Alistair

But others will applaud him, and it not a career move, as it once a year event. Yes he won’t be invited back it no biggie.

Playing video games is not a career but a hobby at least for me, there are youtubers that use video games as a job. But not with a company. Just for themselves.

Unless you saying he working with a big company but even then do you want to work with a company that endorsed censorship?

          • For a lot of the guys at EVO the fighting game community is their career. They make anywhere between $30,000 to $150,000 a year depending on the tournaments. I think EVO is like $50,000 if you nab the grand championships. ESL’s season finale nets you $60,000. So yeah, it’s an actual career for these guys, and missing out on EVO means missing out on some big cash and their livelihood.

EDIT: Whoops… I was way off. EVO grand championship is worth $76,000

Oh the irony what to do, do you walk away in protest of censorship and lose all those big bucks or do you say fuck censorship/don’t care about censorship I’m only ere for duh money.

You can’t be both, meaning you can’t be against censorship if you doing the opposite. It like me saying I’m anti censorship but I understand these regressions cunts trying to say censorship is Good.

So if you into mega bucks and into against censorship then they are fools. There no half house.

Matter of fact we admire them, if they withdrawn, even youtubers are taking a huge hit in money wise by vids not been monenize but they accept that and carry on regardless. Besides I don’t have to worry about mega bucks so I’m lucky that am being consistent.

The question is can you trust someone when money talks I called that a sell out.

Edit: anyways if they crap at games they get zero cash so why fucking bother. lol 😂

Is there anything good at all about cable television in CURRENT YEAR? You got degenerate and dysfunctional families like the Kardashians and anti, well, anti everything Western civilization on channels like MTV, yet a video game costume that we were using when we were 5 is too risque.

Okay ESPN, go work on your Body Issue now.

    Espn is feminism

    • John27

At this rate the only sports ESPN is going to cover are Women’s Golf and Roller Derby.

    • CatCouch

I really don’t understand how this is feminism. How did covering up women and slut shaming them for their attire become feminist? They don’t seem to stand for it in real life so why are the rules reversed for art?

I’m having a really hard time wrapping my mind around what feminism is these days. I’m not pro or anti-feminist now, I just don’t understand what it means anymore.

      • It’s because they know that mostly boys and men play and enjoy video games/fighting games, they know that we enjoy sexy female characters. That’s the real reason on why they want to censor/ban it. If you’ve ever watched any of Anita Sarkeesian’s videos on video games (I’ve seen all of her videos), you’ll see that the main reason on why she thinks sexy female characters are “problematic” is because it appeals to boys and men. She never directly says this, instead she uses the “think of the children” and “muh disrespect” and “muh patriarchy” cards to disguise this. And that’s basically the feminist/SJW view on video games.

Judging from the mainstream media, news media, academia, education, politics, government, women’s groups, entertainment media, TV, campaigns, activism, Social Media, Hollywood, etc., feminism means outright misandry, man-hating, anti-male, anti-Caucasian and anti-male culture. Basically, advocation for female supremacy. And I’m not even joking, all you have to do is look at the constant s*itting on males in the above sectors and you’ll see this. Not to mention the laws that feminists are getting passed and want to pass.

I know you probably still go back to and want to believe the dictionary definition of feminism, but it’s virtually never been about equality. The only moment in time where feminism was genuinely about equality was when they were fighting for the right for women to be able to vote. Otherwise, it’s pretty much man-hating all the way through. The 1st wave were racists, the 2nd wave were fear-mongerers and the 3rd wave, well we all know what the 3rd wave are about because we’re fighting with them now.

The fact that SJWs and feminists refuse to call themselves egalitarians speaks for itself.

        • CatCouch

I try to be open minded and remind myself that this is vocal minority skewing established movements that predate them.

From my experience as an artist, the people I talk to, men and women, seem level headed on these issues. Then I get the one hostile, vocal person who lives up to every stereotype imaginable. It’s weird.

Maybe 10% of the people I talk to online in art communities fall into that vocal minority but holy hell are they extreme. There’s no in between, it’s 90% reasonable debaters and 10% irrational men and conservative haters. And they assume everyone is a white male conservative.

I’ve been told all art is objectification because paintings/drawing/photos of women are literal objects for the viewer to leer at. WTF? I just recently had someone tell me conservatives descended from the Third Reich, literally. I was on this persons side in a transgender discussion and they still treated me as an enemy.

There’s definitely a problem here that’s not being addressed. I see it in our politics now, I can’t watch most news anymore, I used to watch Fox News to laugh at it and guess which stories would make it to the Daily Show. Now I watch Tucker Carlson with more attention and I don’t watch the Daily Show or CNN at all. That says a lot as I’m really liberal, but as an artist I see a real threat to my freedom of expression.

          • RichardGristle

            Whoa.

          • Then I get the one hostile, vocal person who lives up to every stereotype imaginable.

Unfortunately it’s this sort of person who is the loudest, most influential, getting the laws passed and indirectly dictating society.

That’s why I’ve always said that it’s useless to even try to debate and reason with them, like with a lot of feminists I try to have a discussion with on Social Media. In my experience, male feminists are cucks, but they tend to be more calm and are more willing to engage with their white-knighting talk. It’s the feminist women that are by far the most irrational and childish. I get blocked by them every time when I say something that resembles egalitarianism. Says it all really.

          • CatCouch

Yeah, I saw the egalitarian thing become an issue with “The Last Night” at E3. I read through Zoe Quinn’s twitter and she had people responding to her saying egalitarianism is code for anit-feminist and misogyny.

I’m just going to pick my battles, social media isn’t worth fighting on, I’ll wait until the issues arise on websites as news, like with Destructoid’s Mauer article. That’s when I’ll push back.

          • Alistair

The thing is, it is a never ending battle, it pure Marxist on they part. Look it up what it means.

The day when SJWs ever admitted they wrong is the day the world ends and that won’t happen.

Censorship is born from fear mongering, fear from backlash so Devs cower in fear and self censored themselves.

This is just another form of excuse to use censorship, it a good job I’m not from stateside.
