Gamers are currently traveling across Ivalice and battling it out with Vaan, Fran, Penelo and Basch, as they go on a quest for vengeance, justice and righting the wrongs of the Empire. Square Enix has re-released Final Fantasy XII as The Zodiac Age, featuring some brand new content and gameplay that was not present during the original Western release on the PS2.

Final Fantasy XII actually still feels really recent to me, and it seems strange it’s being remastered so soon after its 2006 release, but I guess it has been more than a decade, so it’s not surprising that a big publisher would want to remaster it and milk it for what it’s worth.

The game does feature 4K support for the PlayStation 4 version, along with HD textures and overhauled soundtrack for higher fidelity output. A story trailer released not too long ago gives you a good idea of what to expect from the characters, the graphics and remastered aesthetics.

Final Fantasy XII always had a unique look to it, the washed out palette and character designs usually helped separate it from other JRPGs out there during that time. It has a somewhat captivating art-style that helps give it an identity that seemed lost during the Final Fantasy XIII arc.

New to the game is the Zodiac Job System, which allows players to develop two different jobs for each character based around 12 available jobs. It’s very similar to the job system from Final Fantasy V. The Zodiac system was originally in the Japanese version but it was cut from the original Western release.

Square also managed to speed up the load times, something that was atrocious back on the PS2. And they also added a speed mode, auto-save function and offer some new physical accessories through the collector’s edition, which includes a Judge Magisters mini-bust, the original soundtrack, a steelbook, an art card set, and an in-game DLC music option.
