Strangers In A Strange Land Removed From Steam For Being Porn

Another game has come under fire from a group of individuals who have complained to Valve to have the title removed from the Steam store on the grounds that it’s “porn”.

The name of the game is Strangers in a Strange Land, and it’s from developer SOMG. The title is about an 18-year-old college student named Billy who visits his step-dad’s farmhouse. He discovers that things are not quite as they seem, and some disturbing and dark events are happening in the area.

Strangers in a Strange Land launched last month on July 28th, 2017. The game was originally promoted as a single-player, point-and-click, 3D adventure game with “animated adult scenes”. It dealt with mature subject matter, but apparently it was too mature for some people, and thus requested Valve to remove it. This was confirmed in a post published on August 19th, 2017, where the lead developer on the project made a Steam thread on the forums explaining the situation…

“So Steam removed the game on accusations that the game is porn. I am in communication with them hoping to find a solution.

“Thank you all for your support!

“Those of you who have the game will still enjoy it”

According to the developer, he will likely hear word about the status of the game in two business days.

The game is currently no longer available on the Steam store, but a cached version of the store page doesn’t reveal to what extent sex and nudity play a part in the game. In a separate thread, one user going by the handle of Hanni, exclaimed that the game promoted incest and disturbing sexual content, and that it was denigrating toward women. Hanni explained why the game should be removed from Steam, writing…

“[…] the whole “story” is based on “the ultimative sin” – if you alter the discription on the store page it will not change the “game”.

I usually don’t complain about anything. But this “game” makes me sick. It’s full of illegal porn, denigration of women and stupid comments…[…]

“If it doesn’t offend you it’s totally okay. I don’t want you to be against it. I just want to raise awareness of this issue and warn other Steam users. This title shouldn’t be purchasable.”

A similar situation unfolded with the game House Party, which was also removed from Steam following complaints about pornography. The game’s developers, Eek! Games, censored the sexual content and nudity, and it was allowed back on Steam. A separate off-site patch was made available to remove the game’s censorship.

Depending on the content in Strangers in a Strange Land, the developer may also have to remove or censor some content before it can be restored to Steam.
