Tekken 7 Sells 1.6 Million Copies, Nearly Catches Up With Street Fighter 5

Bandai Namco has managed to sell 1.66 million copies of Tekken 7 across PS4, PC, and Xbox One. The news was picked up by Avoiding The puddle from a Japanese financial report published on Bandai Namco’s site.

Bandai Namco is hoping to sell 2.1 million copies before 2018.

The highlight of the news is that within the span of just two month’s time – from June to August – Bandai Namco managed to move just as many copies as Street Fighter V did over the course of a year and a half. For reference, Street Fighter V launched for PC and PS4 back in February, 2016 and managed to only move 1.7 million units from 2016 up until the latest quarter in 2017.

Essentially, Tekken 7 is just 340,000 units away from matching Street Fighter V‘s sales.

With a decent set of DLC on the horizon – including Geese Howard from SNK’s Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series – Bandai Namco might be able to move those remaining 400,000 units throughout the holiday season.

For the first time ever the Tekken series debuted on Steam, and that demographic contributed 257,000 units to the total install base, according to Steam Spy.

Basically, Namco managed to find easy success in the newest Tekken thanks to releasing a full game that’s fully featured and launched with a story mode, an arcade mode, and offline single-player right out of the box. Capcom tried to launch Street Fighter V broken and gimped for $60, and a lot of gamers just did not bite. Capcom had hoped to move 2 million SKUs during the first two quarters but came up short big time.

Maybe for their next outing, Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, Capcom will ensure that all the modes are done right proper from the start and that the game is fully featured at launch for the $60 price tag. I think it might also help launching on the Xbox One in addition to PC and PS4.
