Bohemia Interactive Simulations Will Use NaturalMotion’s Morpheme For Sim Products

The offshoot of Bohemia Interactive, known as Bohemia Interactive Simulations, has announced that they have acquired a license to utilize NaturalMotion’s Morpheme in their simulation products, usually themed around military training exercises.

Morpheme is a procedural animation middleware suite that allows characters to react and respond based on physics-based properties affecting their motion, state, and movement. The latest iteration of Morpheme has also added a new Kinematic Behaviors function for more realistic responses from the actors.

Otakar Nieder, the senior director of development at Bohemia Interactive Simulations explained exactly why they decided to integrate NaturalMotion’s middleware into their simulation programs, mentioning in the press release…

“Integrating Morpheme into BISim products will allow trainees’ movements to be far more accurate and realistic. Each movement along the way will seamlessly mesh with the one before, creating a sense of realism within the experience like never before,”

 

“When it came time to choose a new animation middleware for our products, our deep roots in gaming and development led us to choose NaturalMotion’s Morpheme. Their blockbuster-level animation technologies are used in many popular commercial games, and it seemed the perfect fit.”

NaturalMotion’s Euphoria technology was most famously used for high-profile AAA titles such as Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption and GTA V. In the case of GTA IV, it’s still one of the most impressive uses of NaturalMotion’s technology, and is celebrated to this day for helping bring Liberty City to life like no other open-world game before it. I could only imagine how awesome the game would have been with more realistic physical responses from the actors with the Kinematic Behaviors system implemented. Heck, maybe we’ll find out with Red Dead Redemption 2?

Anyway, the partnership between Bohemia Interactive Simulations and NaturalMotion will see the former implementing the latter’s tech into their VBS IG, which will affect the primary animations and inertia of every object within the world generation simulation. The tech will also be applied to the VR-based flight simulation programs and other upcoming simulators such as the Virtual Battle Simulator Blue IG, which is due to release in 2018, along with Virtual Battle Simulator 3.

Consumers of Bohemia Interactive Simulations will see the result of the Morpheme tech with the release of Virtual Battle Simulator Blue IG later on in 2017.
