DreamWorks and Digital Domain recently announced that DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles will be launching at the end of the month for PlayStation VR owners. The game is currently available for pre-order, but given that there’s very little info available about the title and the announcement trailer isn’t very convincing about it being a quality-made title, it’s probably best to ignore that pre-orders even exist.
The news rolled out over on the PlayStation Blog, where creative director at Digital Domain, Jaime Bencia, explained that DreamWorks Voltron VR Chronicles will be an episodic VR experience that they’re working with Universal Brand Development in churning out following on the wrap-up of the third season of the NetFlix series.
In the first episode players will take on the role of the Blue Paladin named Lance. The first episode, called “Seeds of Corruption, is about overcoming Zarkon’s forces while attempting to solve some ancient mystery.
One of the things they mention in the announcement is that all of the television voice actors have also contributed their voices to the project. You can see what the first episode looks like with the teaser trailer below.
Now before you throw your hands up and say “I don’t want to watch Voltron in VR!”, there’s actually more than just sitting there and watching events play out. You also get to interact with some of the world and characters through some light gameplay mechanics. For instance, in the video above you see that Lance is shooting at some enemies using the Blue Lion – players will be able to actually play this segment using the PlayStation Move wands.
There will also be some other light sprinklings of interactivity featured in the first episode in order to hook fans into the experience.
Ultimately, though, it’s more like an extension of the show and it’s most certainly not a real game, so don’t get your hopes up.
Over on the PlayStation store page the pre-orders are available at 20% off the SRP, so you’ll only have to pay $11.99 instead of the regular $14.99 per episode. I doubt it will be worth it, but you can look for the first episode to become available on September 26th for the PlayStation VR headset.
