Flynn: Son Of Crimson Successfully Surpasses Kickstarter Goal

Studio Thunderhorse’s Flynn: Son of Crimson managed to just squeeze by its Kickstarter goal of $40,000, racking up a total of $63,218 over the course of the crowdfunding run. This means that the developers can work on finishing off the gameplay and prepping to launch the title in early 2019.

The game is definitely a long ways off from release but it’s an impressive looking game so far, taking a lot of inspiration from the 16-bit era of fast-paced, action hack-and-slash platforms like Gunstar or Excalibur 20XX. However, the game has an aesthetic themed after more fantasy-oriented adventure games like Rocket Knight, Chrono Trigger or Breath of Fire.

You can see what the gameplay looks like so far based on the demonstration video that Studio Thunderhorse rolled out during the crowdfunding campaign.

The game takes a few liberties in adding some unexpected mechanics, such as being able to ride on the big fluffy looking dog-wolf creature, or navigating through a level where you’re falling through what appears to be a seemingly endless pit in a tower.

The actual combat looks extremely smooth, though. The sword attacks have that classic Japanese-style combat aesthetic to them, with the game mimicking the sort of battle moves you would typically find in a Treasure game.

But you’ll not only platform and venture your way through perilous locations where you’ll rely on reflexes and your combat prowess, there are also segments where you’ll need to rely on your sense of exploration as you go spelunking or diving deep into underwater caves.

Gamers liked the idea so much that they surpassed the original funding goals and pushed onward toward the PS4 and Xbox One stretch goal. Unfortunately the Nintendo Switch isn’t on the list, but given how popular that system is you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s likely going to come up in a conversation at some point in the near future.

The stretch goals stopped just below the animated intro sequence that would have been put together Studio Yotta, but that’s not that big of a deal missing out on that feature.

Anyway, from here onward you can keep track of the development as Studio Thunderhorse will spend the next year and a half toiling away on Flynn: Son of Crimson. For more info be sure to check out the update section on the Kickstarter page.
