Dambuster Studios and Deep Silver announced that Homefront: The Revolution has an Xbox One X update available for download starting today, which adds ultra HD textures to the game, makes better use of the memory management for the Xbox One X, and ups the resolution to 3200 x 1800 with progressive scanning.
The news comes courtesy of a press note indicating that the “4K” update for Homefront: The Revolution is currently available to download for Xbox One X owners. The console is available starting from today for $499.99.
The reason I put 4K in quotation marks is because not every aspect of the game has been fine-tuned for 4K output. The internal resolution has been increased to 3200 x 1800p, which is – as some of you know – quite shy of the native 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160, or 8:3MP at a 16:9 aspect ratio.
For reference, the difference between 1800p and 2160p is a gap of 2.5 megapixels, or 2,534,400 pixels.
For further reference, there’s a smaller gap between 720p and 1080p than there is 1800p and 2160p. The difference between 720p and 1080p is only 1.1 megapixels.
It’s rather odd that companies would be proud about this discrepancy, especially considering that the issues with 720p versus 1080p were significant enough, but the difference between 1800p and 2160p is massive.
What’s even more interesting about this news is that despite all the talk about the Xbox One X’s 4K capabilities, a lot of the “4K” updates are still similar to the PS4 Pro’s “4K” updates, which also included resolution bumps up to 1800p.
Now, this doesn’t mean that Homefront: The Revolution won’t look good on 4K televisions. It’ll still be upscaled through checkerboarding to render at optimal performance on a 4K television. For those of you without 4K televisions, the game will utilize super-sampling for 1080p and 1440p televisions, for even sharper resolutions on non-4K TVs.
What won’t be upscaled, however, is the old-school Time Splitters 2 arcade machine tucked away inside Homefront: The Revolution. The arcade game based on the sixth-gen shooter will run at native 4K on the Xbox One X at 3840 x 2160p.
In addition to this, the recent update also adds HDR support for Xbox One S and Xbox One X owners.
The 4K update is currently free for everyone who already owns Homefront: The Revolution. They’ve also discounted the game on the Xbox Store by 70% off as part of a Deals With Gold promotion, which will be available up until next week on November 14th.
Free trials for Homefront are also available to play-test the game to see if it’s worth money. The game didn’t sell that great and reviewed about as well as it sold. It’s kind of the inverse of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, insofar that instead of fighting Nazis from Germany that are occupying America, you fight Communists from North Korea who are occupying America.
