Mutant Football League Available For Download Via Xbox One’s Game Preview Program

Digital Dreams’ crowdfunded action-sports game, Mutant Football League, has made its way onto the Xbox One’s Game Preview program. This means that those of you interested in the gory revival of one of EA’s coolest and most brutal franchises from back in the 1990s, will surely enjoy the fact that the game is back.

The action-packed Mutant Football League looks very similar to Games Workshop’s Blood Bowl series, but instead of being a turn-based strategy game, Digital Dreams Entertainment’s title is a full-on, real-time sports game.

You can see what the gameplay is like with the trailer below.

The game is still in deep development and there are obviously a lot of changes and upgrades and improvements that need to be made.

On the upside, however, the game looks graphically competent. I think there still needs to be a lot of tweaking and fixing when it comes to the actual gameplay balance and mechanics.

Nevertheless, the core of Mutant Football League is that it’s an over-the-top, 7-vs-7 throwdown on a field filled with traps, hazards, and even some monsters who will reach up out of the ground and chow down on players who are unfortunate enough to get in its path.

There are 18 different fields to play, multiple field hazards to encounter, and support for two player online play or four-player local play.

Just like the old games on the Genesis, you’ll be able to use standard football plays to drive the ball down the field, but when things start getting hairy you can start getting dirty, using cheating tactics like bribing the ref, or explosives to take out your foes. The gameplay isn’t quite as smooth and well paced as the 16-bit titles, but hopefully with some updates they’ll be able to get there.

Digital Dreams Entertainment has plans on fully releasing Mutant Football League when it graduates Early Access by January, 2018 for both PC and Xbox One.
