Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Story Trailer Succinctly Explains The Character Motivations

Monolith Soft’s Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is gearing up for release on December 1st for the Nintendo Switch this week. The game hasn’t been at the forefront of Nintendo’s promotional efforts quite like their other games such as Super Mario Odyssey, but with the launch set for later this week they’ve stepped up the marketing a bit.

The new story trailer is just under three minutes long, featuring a slightly detailed rundown of who the main players are and what their motivations are.

One thing they note right off the bat is that you can either play the game with English voiceovers or Japanese voiceovers. From the trailer you can already tell that the Japanese are far superior and your best experience playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will be with English subtitles. You can check it out below.

The trailer covers how Blades can live an eternity, and how the main female protagonist, Pyra, isn’t entirely fond of living an eternity since she’s fine with forgetting some of the more painful memories of her past. Throughout the trailer they explain that when the Blade’s Driver (or wielder) dies, the Blade returns to the crystal and their memories are wiped.

This creates conflict between Pyra and her new Driver, Rex. Rex is intent on keeping her safe at all cost, while a dangerous group of others are intent on capturing Pyra.

Despite all the opposition, doubt, and tumult that Rex and his buddies face, he’s still intent on getting Pyra to Elysium and discovering their true fate.

It’s probably one of the better trailers for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 because it focuses more on what’s at stake for the characters and what some of the character interactions will be like. The end of the trailer is not what you might expect, and it’s far more cynical than the bright aesthetics let on.

You can look for the game to launch on December 1st at the end of the week, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
