Piranha Bytes and THQ Nordic announced that a major update has launched for ELEX, their futuristic, sandbox, action-RPG. The update first and foremost adds upscaled 4K support for the PS4 Pro version of the game and the Xbox One X version of the game. Unfortunately it’s not native 4K.
Piranha Bytes also added additional rendering support for FXAA and SMAA 2x anti-aliasing for improved sharpness and object clarity. They’ve also completely reworked many of the in-game meshes and textures in order to accommodate the higher resolution scaling, along with modifying the LOD range so that some of the texture maps and meshes display properly when at specific ranges.
In addition to the display updates for the home consoles, the patch also contains some slight modifications to the actual gameplay, including new difficulty settings, and a whole bunch of fixes to some of the game-debilitating bugs that affected the quests. The bug fixes for the quests are too long to list, but basically there were tons of fixes for map target fixes and illogical dialogue options being fixed. They added Chinese language support for the largest gaming demographic on the planet, along with balancing out some of the HP, damage, and perk effects you’ll experience throughout ELEX.
They’ve also fixed a collision mesh bug where players would fall through some of the geometry.
The game received a lot of mixed reactions because it’s quite the ambitious sci-fi action-RPG, but at the same time it has all the hallmark trappings of a Piranha Bytes game, which usually includes a lot of the stuff they’re currently fixing right now. So if you’re willing to tough it out and wait for a few more updates and deal with the rough-around-the-edges presentation, ELEX is probably a game worth checking out if you’re starved for a post-apocalyptic, open-world, action-RPG.
