The androgynous, black, (possibly lesbian?) robot from Mighty No. 9 named RAY, will be joining Mighty Gunvolt Burst via update 1.3.
According to the MGB website, RAY will be added to the game, along with Copen from Azure Striker Gunvolt and Kurona from Gal*Gun 2. Each of the characters will be available as DLC for $1.99 each, starting December 28th for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS. You’ll be able to purchase the characters from the Nintendo eShop.
For those of you unfamiliar with RAY, she is the androgynous rival robot to Beck from Mighty No. 9. You can scope out the image below.
According to Comcept USA’s former community manager, Dina Abou Karam, it was revealed in leaked chat logs from the Crash Override Network that she had set out to join the community management team with the express purpose of injecting third-wave feminist propaganda into Mighty No. 9. In the leaked logged, Karam explains…
“You all have no fucking idea how sexist my employer is and what I had to do to get them to 1) change no.2 into a girl 2) make Beck’s rival Ray into a black woman presenting androgynous 3) add another big character as female which I can’t tell you about because they have not been revealed yet.
“Oh [Mighty No 9] still has the trademark japanese underlying sexism. […] I was just gonna keep my head down and not say anything SJW-ey when I first got the job but after they tried to get me fired/kill myself I went full feminist and it kinda worked haha.”
Many gamers were perturbed at the idea of a self-proclaimed Social Justice Warrior purposefully joining a game studio just to inject their own personal politics into the game, and doing so in order to anger and rile up the community.
As you can see from the art for RAY, there’s nothing distinctly feminine about her, similar to characters like Billie Lurk from Dishonored: Death of the Outsider, who is also a black, lesbian, disabled, cyborg.
Many Social Justice Warriors are also obsessed with disfigured (or disabled), lesbian, black women, hence RAY being an unstable prototype with a malfunctioning body and a missing eye.
RAY was supposed to be Mighty No. 9’s equivalent to the highly popular Zero from the Mega Man X series, who is also somewhat androgynous, but RAY’s gameplay mechanics were poorly done and left many gamers frustrated when they released the RAY DLC back in June, 2016.
We’ll see if Inti Creates has been able to balance RAY’s gameplay design for Mighty Gunvolt Burst, but there’s still that lingering shadow of SJWism looming over this controversial Mighty No. 9 character.
