Hacking, slashing, killing, decapitating, dismembering, and disemboweling are all okay, but a man inadvertently touching a woman’s boobs while being impaled and having his nuts crushed in the process was too inappropriate for an ‘M’ rated game like For Honor… according to Ubisoft.
Ubisoft removed the touching from the “No Touching” execution that was briefly added to For Honor and then removed. You can see the original animation below, courtesy of Talon Dillard.
Ubisoft decided to replace it where instead of accidentally touching the Viking Valkyrie’s boobs before being kicked in the groin and thoroughly executed, he now touches her shield, which obviously removes the comical aspects from the execution.
A Ubisoft rep told Kotaku that they had to remove it because in an ‘M’ rated game with blood, gore, and lots of limb severing, comical innuendo was “inappropriate…
“[the original execution] included an inappropriate gesture between the Valkyrie and her opponent. We felt it was insensitive content and thus changed the execution.” The execution was, “incorrectly made available in-game and removed within an hour of release,”
“[the team will] ensure insensitive content is not incorporated into For Honor.”
Isn’t killing and murder insensitive content? Also isn’t kicking a man in the groin insensitive content? I mean, what exactly is the barometric gauge on what goes from sensitive content that’s acceptable to insensitive content that’s not?
Many normal gamers saw the boob grab as a humorous execution gag; a common comedic trope oftentimes seen in animes.
Instead, Ubisoft decided to censor the animation and remove the humor out of it, instead turning it into a gendered assault on male genitalia. However, there isn’t much reason for laughter and the context is now as mundane and dry as a sack of salt in the summer.
Some people tried defending that Ubisoft only removed it to fix clipping, audio and animation issues and that it would return when properly optimized. Oh, how naïve they were. Others finally realized why it was actually removed and eventually came to terms with the fact that the topic of sexism was to blame.
As many others pointed out, not only did the man being executed mistakenly grab the Valkyrie’s boobs but he also paid dearly for his mistake.
However, Social Justice Warriors don’t believe in fun, don’t believe in humor, and have many double standards when it comes to “sensitive” subject matter. As a few people pointed out in the Kotaku comment thread, the Regressive left are constantly trying to censor and remove anything that remotely offends anyone, all to the effect of completely stripping away any semblance of identity to a creative work in order to appeal to every sensitive and easily-offended person’s sensibilities.
