Algo Bot, Edutainment Puzzle Game Helps Teach You Real Programming Skills

Learning something new can be a daunting task, whether it be mountain climbing, biking, art, neurophysiology, or programming, these things can sometimes scare away newbies just thinking about what skills it takes to master those activities. Well, Belgium-based developer Fishing Cactus has decided to make learning programming as easy as possible by gamifying the process through their new edutainment puzzle title, Algo Bot. The game is currently available right over on the Steam store for $9.99.

The coding-based adventure title sees players in control of a robot who happens to be down and out on his luck. Your objective is to help the robot navigate through a colonization ship called the Europa. You’ll have to carefully plot out the path for Algo through 46 different levels using variables, functions and subroutines.

Along the way the Algo Bot meets up with a cast of other colorful robots as they must keep the Europa functioning while all the passengers are asleep on the colonization ship.

The trailer reveals that many of the puzzles are logic based, where players will have to attempt to get Algo from one room to the next while avoiding obstacles and flipping switches.

The core of the game centers around functions, recursive functions, debugging, variable management, and optimization.

It gives you a core breakdown of how most programming languages function and why certain routines work the way they do and how they’re executed. It’s also a good way to help understand logical conundrums and working your way around them or finding alternative solutions to prickly problems.

It’s not going to make you a NASA-qualified quantum engineer overnight or teach you how to utilize polynomial strings to optimize a cloud database, but it will give you a basic foundation of how to approach the basic software architecture of programming, which is a great first step for kids interested in getting into game design or software engineering.

You can check out Algo Bot right now over on the Steam store. During the first week of being on sale the game is marked down by 10% off. For more info you can visit the official website.
