NIS America announced that the action espionage game, Assault Spy, is due to release on PC this May as an Early Access title on Steam . Strangely it’s not coming to home consoles or portable devices, but will launch exclusively for PC… for now.

The game is an action-oriented third-person title where you take on the role of the hapless spy Asaru, or the gung-ho action-heroine, Amelia. It’s no surprise that there’s a lead heroine in an action game, which seems to be all the rage these days that you can’t talk about or criticize lest people will drag you through the mud for certain reasons.

Anyway, the game is supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek action title with a dash of comedy. You’ll be able to dash around the levels, dodging bullets and executing combo moves to take down your foes.

I’m not sure what to make of this game.

Developer Wazen definitely has something unique on their hands here, and it’s as fast-paced and over-the-top as S4 League but follows in the footsteps of other eight-direction hack-and-slash beat-’em-up titles out there that are typically found on home consoles.

I actually do love the inside-to-out crescent kick that Amelia pulls off to finish up her combo. But trying to get a gauge on what this game is beyond a room-to-room, wave-based action title is a little difficult, and the press release doesn’t help any with giving an overall scope of what else the game will feature other than racing around, beating up a few guys in some stylized cubicles.

Assault Spy will feature two different stories based on Asaru and Amelia, so you’ll get double the amount of content for what will make it into the final thing.

Over on Wazen’s YouTube channel we do get to see some prototype footage of Assault Spy
and how the seamless ground-to-air combos work, as well as the transitions between pulling off combos and using projectile weapons.

It’s a nice sign, though, that we’re seeing more native Japanese indie developers focusing on making real PC games and stepping outside of their typical closed-platform boxes.

You can look for Assault Spy to drop on Steam Early Access this May.
