Claybook Lets Players Mold Physics-Based Clay On Xbox One

Developer Second Order managed to release Claybook onto the Xbox One via the Game Preview program. The game is currently available with Xbox One X enhancements on the Microsoft Store for $14.99.

Thankfully there is a “Try It For Free” option so you can try the game before you buy it.

So what is Claybook? Well, it’s a story book game where you create and build your own books and chapters… out of clay.

The goal is to complete the obstacles and challenges presented to you in each chapter. You’ll be able to freely use the clay provided to you in the sandbox to shape and mold it into what you want.

The chapter mode can be played through in single-player or in split-screen mode for up to four-players. The sandbox mode can be accessed where you can just do whatever you want with the clay available to you. You can get an idea of how the game is played with the trailer below.

The physics-based puzzle simulator is kind of crazy. It reminds me a little bit of what Microsoft tried to do with Project Spark and kind of failed.

Visually the developers definitely managed to capture the look and feel of molded clay, and the game has a very bright and inviting aesthetic to it.

However, some of the gamers participating in the Early Access have intelligently explained why the game isn’t quite as in-depth as they may have hoped.

Guardian_Angel writes…

“Claybook has a lot of potential with that physics engine and it also looks great, but there are only so much things that you can do in this game, so where is no point in sticking around for too long after you’ve finished the dev level course and played some workshop ones.”

Now, on the upside the game is still in Early Access and the Xbox Game Preview program, so there’s plenty of time for Second Order to fix up Claybook nice and neat. It also includes Steam Workshop support, so gamers can use the built-in tools to design their own challenges and chapters for others to experience.

You can check the game out now on the Xbox Game Preview, or look for it to launch in full later in 2018 for PC, Xbox One and on PS4.
