Koei Tecmo and Omega Force finally let loose Dynasty Warriors 9 for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The game is currently available both digitally and physically for your gaming platform of choice… except for the Nintendo Switch. Regardless of Switchites being denied this game, there are some gameplay walkthroughs available for Dynasty Warriors 9.
YouTuber Shirrako has a walkthrough guide for the five different factions available in Dynasty Warriors 9 including Wei, Wu, Shu, Jin, and other, where the different officers have their point of view showcased throughout the story, like in typical Dynasty Warriors fashion. You can check it out below – oh, also be sure to switch the voice overs to either Chinese or Japanese unless you want cancer.
No matter who you start with, you’ll have to unlock all the chapters after Chapter 1. If you decide to start with Shu you’ll have Liu Bei at your hands.
The first Chapters for each of the factions start against the Yellow Turban rebellion. Your very first mission will be to fight against the Yellow Turbans and protect your land.
Much like the older Dynasty Warriors games, completing objectives will complete the mission and unlock new quests.
Once the cinematic ends the basic controls will be presented.
Square and Triangle on the DualShock (or ‘X’ and ‘Y’ on the Xbox Controller) will perform your basic attacks. Press ‘X’ on the DualShock or ‘A’ the Xbox Controller to jump. You can perform air juggles with certain characters by holding down the right bumper and pressing any of the face buttons, and then jumping in the air and rapidly tapping Square on the DualShock or ‘X’ on the Xbox controller to maintain the air juggle.
Every attack builds up your Musuo Gauge and when it’s full you can press Circle on the DualShock or ‘B’ on the Xbox Controller to unleash your rage.
Press in the right analog to lock onto your enemies.
You can evade by pressing the right trigger, or wall jump by double tapping ‘X’ on the DualShock or ‘A’ on the Xbox Controller when you’re near a wall. You can sprint using the right bumper and the left analog stick.
Keep in mind that special maneuvers will deplete your stamina, and you’ll have to wait for it to recharge once it’s out.
You’ll unlock scrolls that contain crafting recipes to make new items. You’ll need crafting materials in order to craft the items made available in the scrolls.
Defeat the enemy Yellow Turban soldiers to complete the mission and you’ll be greeted with an inordinately long cinematic.
Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu will make a blood oath as brothers.
You’ll literally earn a trophy just for watching that really long cutscene.
Once the cutscene is done you’ll be able to play as both Zhang Fei and Guan Yu.
You can change your officers, change your equipment, or modify your attire from your base camps, located on the main maps. Inside the camps there are areas where you can swap out your horse, and modify your equipment and accessories.
How To Craft And Equip Gems In Dynasty Warriors 9
Your next task is to craft a gem at the blackmisth. It’s marked on your map. Talk to the blacksmith and craft the Thunder Gem.
You’ll need 8 Chrysobery.
Once the gem is crafted you’ll be able to equip the gem into your slotted weapon. Open the officer equipment window and slot the gem into any of the attack slots on the character weapon menu, as pictured below.
You can also upgrade your character’s attributes by assigning them upgrade points you’ve unlocked after earning a level.
Once you finish equipping the gem, head to Mt. Bai Lang by talking to the Private NPC in purple armor at the head of the village, who will move you to the next mission location.
This will open up the next mission: Defeat Zhang Jiao.
You can also grapple your way up watchtowers and walls by using the right bumper on certain structures.
You have to stand in a particular spot in front of a climbable tower and wait for the R1 prompt to appear before you can grapple up. When you grapple up a watchtower, it will reveal more of the map, just like in Assassin’s Creed.
There are a few side-quests within the fort as well, such as the Prepare for Battle quest, where you’ll need to make your way out of the city wall and collect the licorice root so you can craft vitality powder at the shop.
Once you return to the fort and acquire the vitality powder you can equip it in your quickslot and use the digital pad to activate the item. You can also press up or down to bring out your bow and fire it as a long-range weapon.
PSA: Be warned, the English voiceovers are cancer and you really, really need to turn off the English voices, otherwise you will be guaranteed to get terminal cancer if you keep them on.
You can also fast travel by opening up the map menu and selecting a named location you’ve previously visited and you can click on that location to instantly teleport there.
You’ll need to travel to the Yellow Turban fort to defeat Zhang Jiao.
You’ll need to travel southwest along the map to reach the fort and then take out the markers on the map inside the Yellow Turban base to complete the mission.
Completing the mission will unlock Xiahou Dun, Xiaohou Yuan, Huang Gai, Dong Zhuo, Han Diang, Cheng Pu, and Zhang Jiao as playable characters.
Chapter 2: Confusion at the Capital
If you were interested in the story of Lu Bu, YouTuber Zanar Aesthetics has a walkthrough guide covering his exploits.
As Lu Bu, your first task is to travel to the castle to take on the quest of Dong Zhuo’s invitation.
You can fast travel to the location and grapple into the castle to talk to Dong Zhuo.
Again, you’ll want to turn off the English dubbing, otherwise the cancer might metastasize into aids.
Anyway, your first major task is to kill Ding Yuan.
You can use the main map to mark the location and travel to Ding Yuan’s spot, where you can kill him and his men good, real good.
More cinematics will play; Diaochan will talk her feminine wiles into the heart of Lu Bu, but it won’t be long until you’re back into the midst of battle where Lu Bu will have to chase down Cao Cao.
You’ll meet the loli-goth Dong Bai.
Once you get done with that cinematic you’ll have to go back in and talk to Dong Zhuo to trigger another cinematic.
Your next goal is to defeat the three heroes. You’ll need to be at least level 17 to take on the task, where you’ll need to fight Yuan Shao and the others located at Luoyang.
The three heroes, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei must also be defeated. Use Lu Bu like the soy-slasher that he is, and show those Wu fools how a real alpha Chinese warrior behaves on the battlefield.
You’ll find Yuan Shao through a series of officers located through the castle at Luoyang. Fight your way up the stairs to defeat him real nice and good, like the soy assassin that you are.
Once he’s defeated you’ll be treated to a short cinematic where you get to see up the side skirt of Diaochan and peek a look at her purple panties.
Diaochan uses her feminine wiles once more to rustle the sword between Lu Bu’s sheath, convincing him to assassinate Dong Zhuo.
Take Lu Bu and prepare to clean up that fat pig’s mess by spilling his guts all over the dynasty’s front steps. Chase that filthy animal down to Chang’an and unleash the mighty fury of Lu Bu’s alpha male machismo against the weakling soy soldiers standing in your way.
They die pretty easily, but once you clear out Dong Zhuo’s men, go to his castle and cut down that swine.
I have to admit that Lu Bu’s voice actor grows on you, and that he comes across as one of the biggest baddest in all of video games. Omega Force made this guy seem like all the awesome manliness of Dragon Ball Z embodied into a single being, and Lu Bu doesn’t even have fireballs!
Lu Bu even tells Lu Lingqi to “go home and behave”. Lu Bu eventually lets her onto the field since she says she has no home to go back to. Hilariously enough, Lu Bu tells her that she better do as he says on the battlefield or he’s forcing her off the battlefield.
This guy is like an SJƜ’s worst nightmare! Plus, his daughter is kind of hot (assuming she’s over 18).
Lu Bu eventually has to defeat Zhang Yan and breach the gates. You can get through the gates by scaling the wall using the grappling hook in order to defeat the Heishan Bandits. Once they’re defeated the gates will open. You’ll need to then travel to the next location and wipe out all the bandits.
Lu Bu wants to beat the crap out of the rest of the enemies but he’s ordered to fall back, which doesn’t sit well with the baddest man in the land. Yuan Shu and Yuan Shao are considered to be too cowardly for the likes of Lu Bu.
Lu Bu resigns from their petty war… like a boss.
You can also check out Sun Jian’s story chapter courtesy of YouTuber Lu Bu Fen Xian. He offers a playthrough of the game as well.
