Steel Wool Studios announced that Horus Heresy: Betrayal of Calth is set to enter into Early Access starting February 27th.
The game is a strategy title where you can play it normally or play it with a VR HMD. It’s centered around Game Workshop’s Warhammer 40K universe and is based around the novel of the Betrayal of Calth.
The VR Mode is designed to give you a human-scale view of the action taking place on the ground level so you can see how combat sequences play out as if you were right there in the midst of the action.
For the Early Access launch the Horus Heresy will feature a full 24 mission campaign. The missions will be designed to intertwine with the narrative of the story so that everything unfolds in a seamless fashion.
There’s also cross-platform multiplayer between the VR and non-VR players, so that both groups of players can play together.
We haven’t had a lot of gameplay content made available via promo videos for Horus Heresy but the little that has been made available showcases a game similar to the likes of XCOM but with a Warhammer 40K motif. I’m sure many fans of the franchise probably won’t mind, but a lot of the appeal is going to boil down to the gameplay, the micromanagement, the meta, and the presentation.
For some odd reason a lot of developers just haven’t been able to capture the dynamics and the dangers that were present in turn-based games back in the mid to late 1990s with titles like Incubation and Jagged Alliance really setting a high bar for the expectation of Western turn-based games.
Anyway, you’ll likely be able to help Steel Wool Studios embark on improving and upgrading the Horus Heresy experience once it enters into Early Access on February 27th. According to the release schedule they’ll focus on the multiplayer combat enhancements first, followed by additional single-player campaign maps, and a wrap up of the story and content.
