Hitbear Studio’s Eternal Dread is currently available right now on Steam for $9.99. During the first week of being on sale it’s marked down by 20% off, allowing you to pick up a copy for just $7.99.
Eternal Dread is an open-world RPG set in a dreadful fantasy world, much like its namesake, where ogres, goblins, and the four Elder Fiends have taken over the land. Nearly all of the men have been wiped out and killed in battle, and now only the beautiful and supple young women in the land remain.
Players will take on the role of Riel, a beautiful young warrior sent out into the harsh world to get stronger, level up, increase her battle prowess and eventually defeat the four Elder Fiends. The gameplay is a mix of open-world exploration and dungeon-crawling hack-and-slash action. You’ll have a number of different weapons, spells and items at your disposal, both long-range and melee oriented. You can check out the gameplay trailer below to see how it plays out.
Now right off the bat I should mention that the animations aren’t the best here. Riel moves pretty stiff and has PS1-quality running and movement animations. It’s not the most enticing element of the game’s aesthetic.
However, the environments are fairly large, somewhat detailed, and diverse – insofar that you’ll have forests to trawl through, mountains to scale, deserts to struggle across, and icy tundras to trek. Riel’s journey obviously won’t be easy.
In fact, as mentioned in the headline, the game is heavily themed around the Japanese fetish of Ryona, where the character encounters humiliating or sexually themed scenarios where she’s put in grave peril and consistent danger.
There are also plenty of gruesome death sequences, including Riel being setup for a beheading, hangings via noose, and crucifixions.
The game stops just short of being an actual H-game. Scenes will usually end with Riel tied up or bound or captured, with a descriptor letting players know that what’s about to happen to her is usually the sort of stuff that R34 fandoms are made of.
Over in the forums there are plenty of people asking about H-content but those who have played the game have made it known that Eternal Dread does not feature any actual H-content. It just teases and flirts around the Ryona-theme. But given how it’s clearly teasing a certain segment of the market, don’t be surprised if a full on 18+ mod shows up in the near future.
