There are some fairly significant divides in how Republicans and Democrats view video games. In a commissioned survey by Minkonet, consisting of 514 online participants, Republicans and Democrats explored the differences in how they view video games, which game characters they would want as real life sidekicks, which fictional game character would make for a great U.S. President, and which celebrity they would want to play games with.
It should come as no surprise that 27% of Democrats would want to play video games with former President Barack Obama, while 27.8% would want to play video games with the drug-using, former rapper known as Snoop Dogg.
Republicans obviously chose those with more traditional American values, including former Golden Girls star Betty White, and current U.S. President, Donald Trump. In fact there was just a 1.7 percentile difference between Donald Trump and Betty White, with Trump garnering 29.6% of the vote while Betty White edged out at 31.3%.
The irony of this survey is that it was conducted back in February of 2018, before President Donald Trump began targeting video game violence in the wake of the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
Now that Republican politicians are focused squarely on regulating/taxing/censoring video games, I wonder if respondents would still have Trump high up on the list?
The Democrats and Republicans shared closer similarities when it comes to who they would want as a real life sidekick from the world of gaming.
Democrats wanted Yoshi from Super Mario World and Pikachu from Pokemon.
Republicans also wanted Yoshi as a side-kick, and there was a tie between Pikachu and Chun-Li from Street Fighter, proving that Republicans are definitely composed of straight males.
The most surprising stat of them all, however, was who the Republicans and Democrats wanted to see as U.S. President. It wasn’t the hard-nosed policies of Mike “The Mayor” Haggar from Final Fight, or the beer and porn antics of Duke Nukem, it was Lara Croft from Tomb Raider with the highest percentage 31.1%, and Princess Peach from Super Mario Bros. with 23.5%.
